Employee Group: CUPE, Local 387 Location: City Hall: 511 Royal Ave Competition #: 1210 Additional Details: The City of New Westminster requires a motivated and dynamic co‑op student to help achieve the City’s transportation goals, focusing on safety, comfort and convenience for all ages and abilities to walk, ride a bike, and take transit. This term, approximately May 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026, offers experience in transportation planning and engineering projects, data collection and analysis, research and conceptual design, public and stakeholder engagement, site inspections, and preparation and maintenance of data sets, records, reports, memos, technical analyses, and documentation. Student in a civil engineering program with an interest in urban transportation and active modes. Awareness of the City’s 2015 Master Transportation Plan, Seven Bold Steps for Climate Action, the Active Transportation Network Plan, and the regional system including transit. Appreciation for the roles of external agencies affecting transportation. Knowledge of specialized transportation software, traffic data sets, neighborhood traffic calming devices, and basic active‑transportation infrastructure is an asset. Proficiency in computer‑assisted mapping techniques and software such as AutoCAD, GIS, graphics tools, and relational databases is an asset. Ability to administer projects, collect, research, organize, analyze, and synthesize technical and statistical information. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally. Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing records, reports, memos, and correspondence. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical reports. The successful candidate may participate in public consultation processes and will have flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
