Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Decisions and Pricing Foundations) We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Decisions and Pricing Foundations team at Affirm . The team owns the foundational Underwriting Engine, modernizing and optimizing underwriting capabilities for a growing number of consumers and merchants while maintaining high availability and excellent economics. Responsibilities Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open‑ended problems. Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ideate, articulate technical constraints, and partner on decisions that consider risks and trade‑offs. Identify project, process, technology, or business issues proactively, advocate for them, and lead in solving them. Support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on‑call efforts. Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, advocating for them beyond the team through writing and tech talks. Help develop talent on the team by providing feedback and guidance, leading by example. Qualifications 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin. Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes. Familiarity with processing data offline using frameworks like Spark or Ray. Knowledge of stream processing architectures and ability to bridge the gap between online and offline systems with hybrid designs. Experience defining a technical plan for the delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple, and extensible design. Write high‑quality code that is easily understood and used by others. Proficient at making significant changes in a large code base, developing a suite of tools and practices that enable safe changes. Strong verbal and written communication skills supporting effective collaboration with our global engineering team.
