Company: Starboard (AI Infrastructure for Global Trade) Title: Senior Software Engineer – Cloud Infrastructure & Core Systems Location: Toronto (On-site) About Starboard Starboard is building the default agentic operating system for global trade — a digital network where freight forwarders quote faster, procure smarter, and operate with AI-level efficiency. Our platform ingests unstructured rate sheets, interprets emails, automates sourcing & quoting, and powers an agentic marketplace for freight procurement. We’re now rebuilding Starboard’s core infra to support a massive scale of autonomous agents running across global trade workflows. Role Overview We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who excels in cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, robust CRUD architectures , and building the APIs and data layers that agentic workflows depend on . This role sits at the intersection of systems engineering and AI enablement . Build the next-generation infra that allows our quoting, sourcing, and rate‑ingestion agents to run reliably, safely, and at scale. Own CRUD systems for rates, shipments, surcharges, customers, vendors, and network data — the “source of truth” for Starboard’s AI agents. Work closely with AI engineers to design schemas, events, and contract interfaces between deterministic systems and autonomous agents. Architect for speed. Our competitive edge in global trade is measured in milliseconds of quote time. What You’ll Work On Cloud Infrastructure Design and maintain scalable, high‑availability cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred). Implement robust observability: tracing, metrics, logs, dashboards. Build event‑driven systems to support agent workflows (Kafka/SQS/PubSub). Create infra that allows agents to run in isolation, with clear guardrails and failover systems. Improve performance of compute workloads across billing, rate processing, and quoting. Core CRUD Systems Own the architecture and implementation of Starboard’s core CRUD modules. Rates & surcharges Quotes & shipments Vendor & customer objects Drayage/cartage & FCL/LCL modules Network & marketplace objects Define versioning, validation, concurrency controls, and data retention policies. Build high‑scale APIs consumed by both UI and autonomous agents. Partner with PM/CEO to translate domain complexity into simplified system models. Agent Interfacing & Platform Foundations Build deterministic interfaces for agents to read/write state. Design permissioning and boundary layers to ensure safe agentic execution. Create structured events that agents can subscribe to (e.g., rate‑sheet‑saved , quote‑request‑received , sourcing‑cycle‑completed ). Implement a feedback loop where agents’ actions update source‑of‑truth systems cleanly and idempotently. Cross-functional Ownership Collaborate closely with AI engineers, infra engineers, and product. Participate in architecture reviews and define standards for code quality & reliability. Mentor engineers; raise the technical bar across the team. Help implement engineering discipline in an early‑stage, high‑velocity environment. You’re a Great Fit If You Have 5–10+ years of experience in backend, cloud infra, or platform engineering. Deep experience with TypeScript/Node , Python , Go , or similar. Strong understanding of AWS , containers, orchestration (ECS/Fargate/K8s), and infra‑as‑code. Experience building high‑scale CRUD systems and data models. Hands‑on experience with event‑driven architectures. Comfortable operating in ambiguous, high‑ownership environments. Strong architectural thinking — you move fast without breaking data integrity. Bonus Logistics, marketplace, or financial‑system experience. Experience working on agent frameworks or LLM‑driven systems. Experience optimizing high‑compute workloads.
