Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Loans Platform) Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer for the Loans Platform team, responsible for Affirm’s core loan products. The role supports scaling the product, adding new features, and collaborating with product and engineering teams to grow the business. Responsibilities Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team; lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems; ensure the team is supported throughout delivery. Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during ideation, articulating technical constraints, and balancing risks and trade-offs. Identify project, process, technology or business issues, advocate for them, and lead efforts to solve them. Support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call efforts. Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards and advocating for them beyond your team. Develop talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example. Qualifications 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin. Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes. Experience defining a technical plan for delivering a significant feature or component with an elegant, simple and extensible design; ability to write high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others. Proven ability to make significant changes in a large code base and develop a suite of tools and practices that enable safe delivery. Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from teammates, managers, and stakeholders. Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team. Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
