Position: Process Chemist


Sialco Materials Ltd., the specialty chemical manufacturing division of CES Energy Solutions, is seeking a knowledgeable and motivated chemist capable of working effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment. The successful candidate will assume a full-time employment role in the capacity of Process Chemist at our chemical plant in Delta, BC .


This role reports to the Director of Product Realization and will work with a group of other chemists to screen starting materials, execute QC tasks for production, perform scale-up experiments for process optimization and synthesize new chemical compounds as needed. The candidate will be working on assigned projects that will interact with internal and external experts to determine methods, procedures and specifications.


The ideal candidate will possess a BSc in Chemistry with at least 5 years of chemical industry experience or an MSc degree in Chemistry with 0-2 years of experience in the chemical industry. The selected individual must be able to plan and execute assigned experiments that support non-routine research activities and project goals with general guidance and direction. We also require the ability to perform research activities independently while working in a team setting, demonstrating skills in data analysis and ability to evaluate quality of data, someone who is highly proactive and self-motivated, with good interpersonal, organizational and planning skills.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Under general supervision, performs experiments that support activities in Research & Product Development.
  • Runs reactions and analysis of data in close collaboration with supervisors.
  • Operates scientific equipment, selects appropriate methods and techniques to perform experiments (GC, HPLC, IR, Viscometer, KF-titrator, etc.).
  • Plans and organizes details of experiments with guidance.
  • Assisting in the daily operation of the laboratory, including safety audits, housekeeping and maintenance.
  • Perform quality control tests in accordance with established SOPs and batch sheets to support plant production.
  • Maintaining and organizing accurate test and inventory records.
  • Assisting in the development and refining of testing procedures and methodologies for new and existing processes.
  • Perform QC testing on incoming materials.
  • Demonstrate good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Works with collaborative communication and problem-solving spirit.
  • Always works with safety in mind.
  • Availability to work on weekends is required.
  • Other duties as required.


Qualifications:

  • BSc in Chemistry with 5 years of experience or MSc in Chemistry with a minimum 0-2 years of experience.
  • Experience with following SOPs in an industrial setting.
  • Basic technical and practical knowledge in operation of bench-scale synthetic chemistry and pilot unit operations.
  • Hands on experience with operating analytical equipment and interpreting results (GC, HPLC, IR, etc.).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated and adaptable to different working environments.
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
