Bigstone Education Authority seeks a passionate and creative Home Economics teacher specializing in food and fashion to equip our high school students with essential life skills. You will design engaging lesson plans, hands-on projects, and activities that develop culinary expertise, nutritional knowledge, fashion design principles, and practical textile skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Foods Focus

Culinary Instruction: Deliver comprehensive instruction on food safety, kitchen techniques, recipe development, meal planning, and nutrition, emphasizing healthy eating habits.

Hands-on Cooking: Create a dynamic learning environment with cooking labs, demonstrations, and opportunities for students to explore diverse cuisines and prepare nutritious meals.

Nutrition & Healthy Eating: Teach students about nutrition principles, food groups, dietary guidelines, and the impact of food choices on overall well-being.

Food Science Connections: Explore the science behind food, including food chemistry, preservation, and connections to food production and sustainability.

Fashion Focus

Design & Construction: Introduce students to fashion design concepts, pattern drafting, basic sewing techniques, garment construction, and textile manipulation.

Fashion Exploration: Guide students in exploring fashion trends, historical and cultural influences on fashion, sustainable fashion practices, and basic fashion illustration.

Upcycling and Alterations: Teach practical skills such as mending, alterations, and repurposing existing garments to promote sustainable fashion practices.

General Home Economics & Cross-Curricular Collaboration

Consumer Education: Develop lessons on budgeting, smart shopping, consumer rights, and marketplace navigation.

Life Skills: Facilitate lessons on basic household management, time management, personal care, and interpersonal skills.

Differentiated Instruction: Employ diverse teaching methods such as whole class lessons, demonstrations, practical work, and discussions to cater to various learning styles and ensure student accessibility. Utilize various materials like textbooks, worksheets, tech tools, cooking equipment, and sewing machines.

Assessment and Evaluation: Develop formative and summative assessments (e.g., projects, presentations, portfolios) to measure student progress and provide feedback.

Classroom Management: Establish a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.

Cultural Collaboration: Develop programming and activities for students with guidance from Cree and language teachers, classroom teachers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members. Ensure activities honor Sakâw Cree skills, values, and worldview and include land-based knowledge (plants, hunting, harvesting, fishing, northern lifestyles).

Teamwork & Cultural Leadership: Work collaboratively within the school team to infuse Sakâw Cree culture. Empower staff and students to develop their Sakâw Cree perspectives.

Community Connections: Establish partnerships with programs promoting Sakâw Cree language, way of life, and land-based education. Organize cultural activities, potentially including trips to Kapaskwatinak Cultural grounds.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Education specializing in Home Economics, Family Studies, or related field.

Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.

Demonstrated Alberta Home Economics curriculum knowledge, particularly in Foods and Fashion.

Experience teaching high school Home Economics courses.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong organization and time management abilities.

Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage diverse learners

Commitment to student well-being, fostering a positive learning environment, and integrating Indigenous perspectives.
