Overview Job Description This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA). The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Native Studies (FNS) is North America’s only stand-alone faculty dedicated to the study of Indigenous experiences, histories, and thought. Defined by community-based learning, research excellence, and deep engagement with Indigenous knowledges, FNS educates graduates who respect Indigenous knowledge and history and can work with Indigenous communities. Our vision is to foster responsible citizenship through teaching, research, and community engagement focused on Indigenous thought. The Faculty of Native Studies is seeking an Indigenous scholar for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor for an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. This is an open disciplinary search, meaning any candidate from the social sciences, humanities, sciences, or fine arts is encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to scholars with experience in the discipline of Indigenous studies and whose research program engages with Indigenous nations and communities, and their priorities, cultures, experiences, institutions, and knowledge systems. Responsibilities Teaching and Teaching-Related Activities Education Teaching and teaching-related activities facilitate student learning and progress through their degree program. These activities occur in credit educational offerings in the Faculty and may include, but are not limited to, the following: Providing instruction to undergraduate and graduate students in diverse settings such as classroom and laboratory, land-based, electives, guest lectures, seminars, distance and web-based delivery. Determining course content, course design, and instructional methodology for assigned courses. Deciding on student evaluation methodologies for assigned course(s), monitoring student progress, and providing timely feedback for classroom, laboratory, fieldwork and practicum requirements. Demonstrating the ability to remain current in the discipline or profession by keeping class material relevant to the needs of students. Maintaining inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environments that reflect the Faculty’s commitment to Indigenous knowledges, histories, contemporary realities, and community-based learning. Research and Scholarly Activity Faculty members are expected to maintain an active research program and/or creative practice at a high standard, contributing to the Faculty’s strategic pillar of research excellence. Develop and sustain a coherent program of research and/or creative activity that advances knowledge in Indigenous studies and aligns with Indigenous methodologies, ethical practice, and scholarly standards. Produce and disseminate scholarly outputs appropriate to the discipline (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, community-facing reports, creative works, presentations, knowledge mobilization activities). Contribute to the training and mentorship of students and emerging scholars. Cultivate and maintain respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities, cross-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaborators, and partners in support of community-engaged research, when applicable. Service Faculty members contribute to the effective functioning of the Faculty and to meaningful relationships with communities. Participate in service to the Faculty through committee work, program administration, governance, curriculum development, recruitment, and other academic initiatives, as appropriate to rank and workload. Contribute to a collegial, collaborative, and student-centred culture within the Faculty. Support community engagement activities that advance the Faculty’s mission and maintain strong community connections, including public outreach, partnership initiatives, and community-based programming, where appropriate. Qualifications A PhD, or equivalent, that is completed (or near completion) before the start date of this position. A PhD in Indigenous studies is preferred and we also encourage those with other forms of Indigenous studies training and research experience to apply. Evidence of effective teaching at the post-secondary level. Evidence of an emerging program of high quality academic research. Evidence of community engagement in research is given priority.
