Interim Strategic Advisor - Laboratory, Digital Imaging & Pharmacy

Reports To: Vice President, Clinical & Support Services

Duration: 6 months

Location: Northern Ontario

Our client, a health authority located in the beautiful north, is looking for an experienced professional to join their team to help them strategically and operationally transform their Lab, DI, and Pharmacy services. The organization is executing a large-scale transformation and is looking for this interim to help review the structure and activities of these core services. In this assignment you will both operationally lead the function whilst driving through change in the portfolio helping the VP to elevate the sophistication and value of the services. The goal will be to set the strategy and begin the change so our client can go to market for a permanent director to lead the functions upon your exit. The key area of responsibility is overseeing the Lab Quality Management System at all sites and evolving the approach to laboratory policy and resources. This is a fantastic assignment for an experienced healthcare professional who has led core support services and loves a challenge.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the programs, services, units, sites, clinics, departments, modality areas, teams, and strategies in providing a seamless continuum of patient focused care.
  • Coach, lead and inspire a diverse and talented team.
  • Provide an assessment of the programs, policies, processes, procedures, and people to the VP.
  • Challenge current processes and bring innovative ideas and approaches to help create a progressive strategy that will lift the value and service levels of these functions.
  • Work with the VP to set a solid strategy and platform for these services to enhance the success of the future permanent Director.
  • Ensure effective working relationships within the programs and services and promote a positive environment for patients, families, and staff.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate an effective communication plan with staff, patients, and families in line with organizational communication strategies.
  • Plans activities based on responding to and anticipating specific organizational needs.
  • Integrates a culture of quality improvement in all program activities.
  • Identifies potential work unit risk exposures, recommending solutions.
  • Works in collaboration with other Programs and Services and stakeholders to ensure that strategies are aligned.
  • Collaborates and builds links and coalitions across and outside organization.
  • Mentorship of new leaders, including managers, other directors, physician leadership.
  • Facilitate solutions to local and regional issues or problems that arise, including the identification of risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Reviews performance indicators to support the achievement of pharmacy service goals.
  • Develops appropriate performance indicators to support the achievement of program/service goals.
  • Measures and evaluates quality of processes and outcomes within a diverse complement of pharmacy services.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.
  • Post-graduate continuing education in management skills (e.g., financial management, conflict resolution, decision making) are required.
  • Proven mentoring and coaching skills.
  • 5 years plus experience with oversight for pharmacy, laboratory, and digital imaging.
  • 10 years of successful and progressive healthcare leadership experience, managing and leading health systems, healthcare transformation, departmental budgets, and large numbers of clinical and professional staff.
  • Experience working in a program management model, in partnership with dyad physician leaders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of care delivery models, clinical best practices and experience working in a values-based environment.
  • Systems lateral thinking - can work well across hospitals, hospital programs, service modalities/disciplines, clinical departments and regionally.
