About the University of Alberta and the Department of Psychiatry Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is part of the College of Health Sciences and is internationally recognized as one of Canada’s premier health‑education institutions, home to more than 38,000 students and over 15,000 faculty and staff. The Department of Psychiatry is a leading academic center that integrates basic science and clinical research, provides a robust residency training program in psychiatry, and has accredited subspecialty programs in Child & Adolescent, Forensic, and Geriatric Psychiatry. The department also offers pre‑clinical and clinical teaching for undergraduate MD students. About Recovery Alberta and AMHSP Recovery Alberta is the provincial agency delivering addiction and mental‑health services across Alberta. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team in the Edmonton Zone—including nursing, psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, social work, education, and speech‑language pathology—to provide education and assistance for more than 1.4 million people. AMHSP positions uniquely combine clinical work with academic responsibilities, offering competitively funded protected time for education and/or research. Remuneration Basical compensation is based on the Academic Medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). Total compensation ranges between $405,904 and $506,522 per year (2024 numbers). The exact amount reflects individual education, experience, and specialty. Responsibilities The clinical component may include any of the subspecialty areas—addictions, child‑adolescent, forensic, community, geriatric psychiatry—as well as collaborative development of services with primary care providers, especially targeting rural populations and Indigenous communities. Responsibilities include consultative, urgent, and emergency care outside large centres, direct patient care, and development of systems and team‑based delivery of care to reach communities and families beyond large centres. The successful candidate will also actively participate in medical education and/or research. In addition to postgraduate residency training, the department commits to education as part of the MD program, providing pre‑clinical and clinical teaching for core and elective experiences for undergraduate MD students. Qualifications Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons as a Psychiatrist with subspecialty training and/or designation in child and adolescent psychiatry. Prior interest or additional training in medical education and/or research is an asset. Positions allow up to 0.5 FTE for medical education or research; the remaining FTE will be clinical services with Recovery Alberta.
