Machine Learning Engineer, Risk AI/ML

About the role Coinbase is on a mission to increase economic freedom worldwide, building the emerging on‑chain platform and a future global financial system. The Machine Learning Engineer will join our Risk AI/ML team to develop sophisticated models that protect customers and build trust. Your work will directly prevent fraud, account takeovers and scams while enabling future products like instant guest checkout and Coinbase Cards. What you’ll be doing: Focus on Modeling: Own end‑to‑end development of ML models on our self‑service platform, from ideation through production. Improve Core Model Performance: Enhance our core models—Scam Models, Transfer/Transaction Risk Models, Withdrawal Limit Models, and Account Takeover Models—in a high‑priority "pod". Rapidly Respond to Threats: Turn new threat data into permanent ML models that replace temporary rules, targeting a publish‑to‑production timeline of under one week. Build & Deploy Scalable Models: Deliver production‑grade AI/ML models and pipelines for reliable, real‑time predictions using automated CI/CD and a centralized feature store. Apply Advanced ML: Use deep learning, NLP, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), sequence modeling, and large language models (LLMs) for NLP and conversational agents to solve complex, crypto‑native challenges. Build Context‑Aware Risk Systems: Create adaptive logic that decides which friction (quiz, LLM agent, human review) to apply to which user, balancing security with experience. Collaborate and Execute: Work closely with Risk Operations, Platform Engineering, and Product Management to close the feedback loop and automate defenses. What we look for in you: 4+ years of professional experience in software engineering and/or AI/ML, with deployed AI/ML systems in production. Passion & Values: Commitment to an open financial system and a strong desire to protect users from fraud and scams. We value energy, clear communication, curiosity, and a builder mindset. AI/ML Knowledge: Familiarity with applied ML techniques such as risk ML, deep learning, NLP, recommender systems, and anomaly detection. Technical & Coding Skills: Proficient in Python and AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch). Experience building backend systems focused on data processing or analytics is a plus. Team Collaboration: Ability to collaborate on technical initiatives and contribute to impactful AI/ML solutions. Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, able to explain technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Nice to Haves: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, or related field. Experience with modern data and AI/ML infrastructure (Feature Stores like Tecton, Model Serving like RayServe, Apache Airflow, Spark, Kafka). Experience with Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) or Sequential Models (LSTMs). Experience with Large Language Models (inference, fine‑tuning, agentic systems) or Reinforcement Learning. Understanding of MLOps best practices, including model monitoring and improvement. Experience with data analysis and visualization tools.
