Senior Legal Counsel, Labour & Employment Law (Legal Services) (Telework/Hybrid) Position Title: Senior Legal Counsel, Labour & Employment Law (Legal Services) (Telework/Hybrid) Status of Employment: Permanent Work Schedule: Full time – hybrid work arrangement in Ottawa or Toronto. Primary Location: Broadcast Centre 205 Wellington St. W., Toronto, Ontario, M5V 3G7 Number of Openings: 1 Seniority level: Mid‑Senior level Employment Type: Full‑time Job Function: Legal Industry: Broadcast Media Production and Distribution Language Requirements: Solid command of English. Knowledge of French (an asset). Responsibilities Provide solicitor services to the organization, including senior management of People and Culture and other components of CBC/Radio‑Canada. Provide barrister services or be involved in labour and employment litigation matters such as labour arbitration, administrative and civil litigation. Provide labour and employment legal counselling services on significant issues and oversee outside counsel if engaged. Participate in task forces or ongoing/special project committees. Provide advice and recommendations to senior company executives on areas of extreme sensitivity, high profile, or having potential for major strategic impact. Promote the use of corporate Law Department services and maintain formal and informal contacts within the local legal community. Participate in managing the activities of the Law Department's administrative and legal staff, including staffing, training and development of employees. Participate in the development of objectives and strategies for the department. Qualifications Minimum 10 years labour relations and employment law (including pension and benefits), experience acquired in either private practice or in‑house, with significant pleading and representation work. Member of the Ontario Bar. Ability to defend principled positions while contributing to corporate objectives and conciliating diverging points of view. Highly developed skills in negotiating complex agreements and leading sensitive discussions aimed at settling litigation or other cases liable to go before the courts. Superior oral and written communication and public‑speaking skills to convey critical information to clients. Knowledge and experience in federal labour and employment law (an asset). Ability to contribute to building corporate know‑how, policies and strategies related to labour relations and employment law. Ability to deal effectively with clients, outside counsel, as well as Law Department colleagues. Must be able to work autonomously. Must be available for occasional travel, sometimes on short notice. Solid command of English. Knowledge of French (an asset). Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing. Background Checks Mandatory criminal record check.
