How You’ll Contribute The AV Design Engineer (DE) is a core team member for each AV (Workplace) project. The DE provides technical direction and insight through the project life cycle—from sales concept to design development, construction drawings to implementation support. As a technical authority on a project team, the DE is instrumental in determining and executing client and system requirements, looking holistically at solutions, and collaborating with teams as required. Reporting to a Senior Leader of Technical Operation (DTO), the DE’s project assignments are determined based on enterprise‑wide demands. Typically, the DE will manage an array of projects ranging from small to mid‑to‑large scale. NOTE - while a virtual position based in Canada, this role supports customers globally. What You’ll Do Lead complex engagements and work directly with clients and project teams to develop solutions, budgets, timelines, and manage expectations. Negotiate changes in deliverables and schedules and serve as an escalation point for engineering issues. Optionally lead project teams on large engagements. Understand SOW, budgets, deliverables & due dates. Define project standards (system names, etc.). Conduct client meetings & reviews. Create design documents and functional narratives. Coordinate IT network design with F.E. and client IT admins. Conceptualize system designs and determine system requirements. Provide technical expertise and coordination information to support system architecture, installation, and planning of audio, video, and control solutions. Oversee and/or develop the Bill of Materials (BOM) and support documentation. Employ detailed design documentation strategy based on established engineering standard practices; develop detailed PDF markups for CAD to translate into construction drawings; track engineering team tasks to completion. Manage as‑built drawings. Lead coordination during design phase with architect, GC, and EC. Generate functional system descriptions, block wiring diagrams, rack elevations, custom plates, or cabling assemblies. Attend technical kickoff, BOM scrub, release to order for PM. Determine, present, review, and justify mathematically sound system design calculation principles (speaker coverage, UPS power requirements, 3‑phase power distribution loads, proper viewing metrics, streaming bandwidth, and labor estimates). Research, identify, and recommend technology options for clients and projects. Provide technical expertise for creation and later reconciliation of the complete construction drawing package. Support test, commission, and configure subsystems during project deployment. Support projects and teams in build phase; complete the as‑built drawings for service hand‑over. Provide regular project engineering milestone status updates to Technical Operations, Project Engineering, and other teams. Continuously develop industry expertise through trade publications, shows, seminars, and educational forums. Complexity The Design Engineer collaborates with the Regional Engineering Manager on resource assignments and Senior Design Engineers, the Technical Operations teams, and Sales teams on projects. This role is primarily billable in a post‑sales capacity, with occasional presales estimation and design tasks. Physical Demands Work is normally performed in an office environment or at home. Occasionally, employees may be exposed to construction site conditions and must comply with all safety regulations; PPE is usually required. Employees may spend at least 50% of their time on their feet and mobile on construction sites. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth vision. Travel Occasional travel by car and occasional airplane trips may be required. Employees must possess a valid driver’s license in their state/province of residence. What You’ll Bring Education & Certifications High school diploma or GED required. Associate or bachelor’s degree required and/or equivalent experience. Certification or training with at least one DSP platform (Biamp, QSC, Clearone, etc.). Certification or training with at least one control system (Crestron, Extron, AMX, QSC, etc.). Minimum CTS certification is required. Required Skills/Qualifications 4+ years in audiovisual technical systems design. AVIXA CTS certification required. Experience with government contracts and federal AV design. Proven understanding of TCP/IP routing, ACLs, QoS, VLANs, and wireless access points. Proven track record of successfully completing engineering projects. Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office 365. Understanding of all project phases: presales, program, conceptualization, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, construction, and commissioning. Demonstrable understanding of construction process, installation, integration, and architectural and construction drawings and specifications. Preferred Skills/Qualifications Electro‑acoustic modeling experience (e.g., EASE) and ability to use SMAART. Exceptional time‑management skills with a track record for meeting deadlines. Excellent communication skills. Ability to analyze complex issues and communicate concise, succinct messages. High level of problem‑solving and technical troubleshooting skills.
