The Child Health Evaluative Sciences (CHES) program is recruiting for a Post‑Doctoral Research Fellow to work within ROCCA (Real‑world Outcomes of Cancer in Children and Adolescents), a newly established research unit at the Hospital for Sick Children. ROCCA comprises a diverse team of clinicians and scientists who focus on studying short and long‑term health and economic outcomes of children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer. The successful candidate will collaborate on and, in many cases, lead studies linking various clinical and healthcare databases. They will also have the opportunity to generate their own study questions, and to liaise with experts in health services research, health economics, biostatistics, epidemiology and paediatric oncology. The successful candidate must be both self‑directed and able to collaborate within a team comprising both senior investigators and junior trainees. The fellow will lead multiple tasks, including conceptualization of study questions, review of relevant literature, development of analytical designs, and manuscript and grant writing. Here’s What You’ll Get To Do Demonstrate scientific creativity and/or knowledge in health services and outcomes research as it applies to children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer. Independently design and implement research projects which use provincial and pan‑Canadian health administrative data, including writing analysis plans and supervising their execution. Help design and write grant proposals for new research studies. Exercise extensive independent judgement, initiative and decision making to resolve problems. Prepare study results, presentations, and peer‑reviewed manuscripts using strong written and visual communications skills with the ability to effectively express complex scientific concepts to various audiences. Manage study databases. Coordinate the management of multiple sub‑projects while ensuring all project/program mandates and goals are achieved and evaluated within agreed upon time frames and resources. Engage with key stakeholders throughout the process of a grant. Attend relevant courses, meetings, rounds or workshops to increase knowledge and skills. Present research findings to internal departments, members of the local research community, and at international conferences. Here’s What You’ll Need PhD with relevant experience specific to health services research and/or analyses using health administrative data. Previous experience working with databases housed at ICES (formerly known as the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences) or at Statistics Canada is a strong asset. Competency to run analyses in statistical software (e.g. SAS, R). Ability to function independently but also collaboratively within a team. Established leadership skills with demonstrated ability supervising a diverse team. Effective communication, interpersonal, facilitation and organizational skills. Demonstrated excellence in academic written and verbal communications. A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives.
