Overview The Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Research Associate at 100% FTE to join the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Kieffer. The Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences does world-class research aimed at understanding the fundamental workings of cells and organisms in an effort to identify the underlying causes of human diseases. The Department’s research is diverse, with investigators working in a wide range of model systems and using biochemical, molecular genetic, cellular and physiological approaches. The Department has particular strengths in neuroscience, endocrinology, development and cancer. This includes the incorporation of the latest technologies in molecular biology, genetics, next-generation genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, and genetically-engineered animal models to complement our expertise in cell biology and physiology. The research in the Department is strengthened by advanced imaging capabilities that include EM, super-resolution, 2-photon, live-cell and high-throughput microscopy. Research in the Department provides insight into fundamental biological processes and pathologies behind diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Responsibilities Key tasks of the candidate will include conducting research with a primary focus on the development and assessment of a stem cell-based therapy for diabetes. This involves stem cell culture, differentiation, and studying hormone actions using diverse model systems. Supervise both graduate and undergraduate students. Actively participate in writing papers for scientific journals and attending scientific meetings. Carry out all duties under the direction of the supervisor, Dr. Timothy Kieffer, with performance evaluated by the supervisor. Education/Experience The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree in biological sciences and/or a related discipline. They will have five years of post-doctoral training with a demonstrated track record of publication in the field of biological sciences or in a related discipline. Skills Strong skill set in the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Medicine. Strong communication skills and the ability to prepare grants, manuscripts and present results at conferences.
