Overview Assistant Vice President, Legal Counsel & Compliance Officer (12 month contract) – Munich Re Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Ontario, Canada. Position We’re looking for our next 12-month AVP, Legal Counsel & Compliance Officer. Could It Be You? Responsibilities Provide sound and practical legal advice to internal clients, review and draft a broad range of agreements, reinsurance treaties, insurance policies, internal policies, procedures and guidelines, and advise on corporate litigation. Collaborate with internal clients to ensure that legal and compliance risk is identified and appropriate action is taken. Work closely with the Risk Management group to address legal and compliance risk, and manage, review and report on the quarterly reserving process for Munich Re of Canada operations. Identify and recommend to the SVP, compliance processes/procedures/measures required to address evolving regulatory compliance requirements, including drafting/revising/maintaining policies and procedures. Support the maintenance of the company’s Regulatory Compliance Management systems with the Corporate and Legal group. Assist management to maintain the company’s compliance “tone from the top” with the support of the SVP. Monitor and coordinate the compliance activities of other departments as necessary. Work collaboratively with Legal, Compliance and Risk colleagues to ensure shared accountabilities are addressed. Ensure OFSI, provincial regulator and Munich Re Group internal reporting requirements are met, together with the Corporate and Legal group. Report to and inform the SVP & General Counsel regularly on the operation and progress of all legal and compliance work and initiatives. Qualifications Minimum of 5 years legal experience; ideally with regulatory, re/insurance, corporate, or transactional emphasis. Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) or J.D.; member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to tailor communication to audience. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Analytical, problem solving, decision making, planning and time management skills. Highly organized with attention to detail; capable of working independently and under pressure. Ability to develop and nurture working relationships within Munich Re North America and the broader group. Strong interpersonal, teamwork and networking skills; collaborates well with others.
