If this sounds exciting to you, join the herd Description: We are looking for a motivated intermediate backend engineer who loves the Internet and enjoys learning, sharing knowledge, and applying new technologies to solve complex problems. As a Backend Software Engineer, you’ll design, implement, and maintain the server-side components of our web applications, databases, and APIs. You should be comfortable navigating existing codebases and collaborating closely with frontend developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver reliable, high-quality software for our users. This is a remote position for applicants based in Canada. Responsibilities: Design and develop secure, scalable, reliable, and efficient backend services using modern frameworks and tools. Collaborate with frontend developers to define clear and consistent API endpoints, request/response formats, and data contracts. Design and schemas, write performant SQL queries, and ensure data integrity and reliability. Integrate third-party services, libraries, and tools within the application architecture. Apply security best practices, including encryption, authentication, authorization, and mitigation of common security vulnerabilities. Continuously improve code quality, performance, and maintainability through thoughtful design and refactoring. Write comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure system reliability and stability. Debug and troubleshoot issues in both new and existing systems. Participate in code reviews, share constructive feedback, and help foster a culture of continuous improvement. Document code, APIs, and system architecture to support knowledge sharing and efficient onboarding. Set up and maintain CI/CD pipelines to automate build, test, and deployment processes. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. 5+ years of experience as a backend software engineer or in a similar role. Proficiency in Python or Go, or experience with similar modern backend languages. We value strong engineering fundamentals and a problem-solving mindset over specific syntax. Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs, ideally using web frameworks such as FastAPI or Gin. Hands‑on experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL (schema design, query optimization). Solid understanding of web technologies, protocols, and standards (HTTP, REST, JSON, XML). Familiarity with Continuous Integration practices and tools. Proficient with Git and modern branching workflows. Comfortable working in agile environments using Jira or similar tools. Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and debugging ability. Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Experience collaborating in a remote, distributed team environment. Clear and proactive communication skills. Nice to have: Experience with message brokers, preferably RabbitMQ. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and containerization/orchestration tools such as Docker Swarm, Nomad, or Kubernetes. Knowledge of API security standards, token management, and access control mechanisms (OAuth2, JWT, OpenAPI, etc.). Familiarity with networking, Linux system administration, and infrastructure operations. The base salary range for this position is $93,600-$104,000 CAD for Canadian residents. Other countries will differ. Range may vary on a number of factors including, but not limited to: location, experience and qualifications.
