Job Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the General Counsel is a strategic leader who has experience as a hands-on General Counsel (“GC”) to lead and manage the Team’s Legal Department. This role serves as a partner to key stakeholders, has experience in managing a wide range of negotiations and transactions, in the context of team promotions, stadium revenue streams and technology deals as well as adeptly handling any employment law, intellectual property, compliance and risk management issues. This role is a unique opportunity to help define and build this exciting team and bring it to life across Canada


The General Counsel is a key member of the team’s leadership team and will be looked on to provide experienced and sound business judgment and legal advice to the organization. Duties and Responsibilities . You have strong people management and leadership skills and can manage the Team’s Legal Department. The ideal candidate is intelligent, hardworking, self-starting, reliable, organized, and can manage multiple assignments and deadlines.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Structure, review, draft and negotiate both routine commercial contracts, and highly complex, customized, mission-critical business agreements, including corporate sponsorships, suite agreements, sweepstakes, ticketing, marketing, event, media rights & technology, premium hospitality, and licensing agreements.
  • Provide expert and practical legal analysis and advice in support of the Team and its stakeholders on a variety of legal issues, including but not limited to labour & employment, intellectual property, marketing, data collection, privacy, and tax, with an eye toward anticipating and limiting potential risk while balancing business objectives.
  • Select, manage, and liaise with external law firm counsel and alternative legal service providers offering legal advice to the organization, as necessary.
  • Oversee all aspects of litigation and dispute resolution on behalf of the Team (including selection and management of outside counsel).
  • Guide risk management activities for the Team, as necessary, and provide training on risk mitigation to all stakeholders including de-risking contracts and communications.
  • Develop and lead internal corporate compliance programs, including compliance with terms of existing contracts with rights holders, sponsors, vendors, and other interested parties, as well as compliance with applicable WNBA policies, local, provincial, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Conduct and coordinate research into a variety of legal issues and provide clear recommendations to stakeholders and staff.
  • In coordination with business colleagues, develop and maintain all relevant policies and guidelines; develop and maintain best practices across the organization.
  • Manage other matters and duties as they present in the day-to-day operations of the Team.


Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five (5) years legal experience.
  • A Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Preferred licensed and in good standing to practice law in Ontario.
  • Experience leading a team.
  • Extraordinary interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, comfortable dealing with ambiguity, and a “no job too big or small” attitude.
