The Associate Director, Democratic Futures, offers a unique opportunity to help shape a major institutional initiative focused on the future of democracy. The role works closely with the CEO & President and the Executive Director, Research, to provide intellectual leadership and advance portfolio development of the Democratic Futures Initiative. The Associate Director leads the planning, coordination, and execution of the Initiative, including launching and supporting two Discovery Panels, representing the Institute in external engagements, and building strong relationships with key stakeholders. Working collaboratively across the Research, Advancement, and Communications departments, the role contributes to evaluation, captures lessons learned, and documents insights to guide future stages and strengthen institutional practice. The Associate Director also serves as a key liaison with funders, supporting stewardship, reporting, and proposal development for future stages of the Initiative. Key Responsibilities & Impact: Collaborate closely with senior leadership to provide intellectual guidance and administrative oversight for the Democratic Futures Initiative. Lead the planning, coordination, and workflow of the Initiative, ensuring coherent delivery across Research, Advancement, Communications, Events and supporting risk‑aware planning for politically sensitive content and stakeholder engagement. Support the appointment of Chairs and Members for two Discovery Panels, develop and maintain Terms of Reference and governance structures, and organize virtual and in‑person meetings to advance Panel work. Design and organize a 25‑person public forum with democracy practitioners, civil servants, NGOs, journalists, and influencers to inform Stage One activities. Staff and ensure the effective functioning of a Global Advisory Council, including organizing virtual meetings and facilitating input to inform subsequent stages. Act as a liaison between research activities, funders, and Advancement, supporting stewardship, reporting, engagement, and proposal development for future stages. Capture and document insights, lessons learned, and outputs from Stage One to guide subsequent stages and inform broader institutional practice. Coordinate additional Panel meetings to finalize key themes, identify research opportunities, and engage members from active and former CIFAR programs. Oversee the drafting and release of clear, concise reports from professional writers to support knowledge mobilization and potential Global Calls for proposals. Serve as an ambassador for the research community and perform other duties as assigned within the Research Department. Occasional travel for meetings or other engagements (approximately 8 per year), typically lasting 2–3 days and potentially including weekends or holidays. About You PhD in social sciences, public policy, or law, with a strong background in democracy‑related research. Minimum 3 years of professional experience beyond the highest degree. Strong project management, planning, and execution skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities. Strategic thinker with excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and evaluative abilities. Deep understanding of research principles and the global research landscape, with experience collaborating across academia, government, and civil society and familiarity with CIFAR’s mandate and activities. French language proficiency is an asset. Hiring Salary Range The salary for this position ranges from $100,000 to $110,000. Placement within this range will be determined based on relevant experience and qualifications.
