The annual pay range for teachers is $61,522 to $108,126, with placement on the range based on experience and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.

Kootenay River Secondary School has a vacancy for a 1.0 FTE Term Aboriginal Academic Success Teacher.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Education (Secondary);

• A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch.

Aboriginal Academic Success Teacher Job Summary:

This is a specialized teaching position, which combines extensive Aboriginal ways of knowing with academic supports for Aboriginal students. This position synthesizes a strong understanding of Aboriginal pedagogy, Aboriginal culture, and specializes in a wide range of instructional areas: BC’s new curriculum, Inclusion, Literacy and Numeracy.

The primary responsibility of this position is to deliver academic support to students, liaising with school based staff including teachers, counsellors, administration, and Aboriginal Education employees. The work of this position is guided by the goals of the District Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement and the District Aboriginal Education goals.

The Academic Success Teacher will collaborate with classroom teachers on Indigenizing curriculum K-12. The Academic Success Teacher will model lessons of Indigenization, sharing culturally based lessons, co-teaching and co-planning with classroom teachers. The work in this position is “over and above” regular instruction in the classroom; while the position may work alongside a classroom teacher, the delivery of curriculum should supplement core instruction and not replace it. The Academic Success Teacher may work in small groups as well as full classrooms as a “push in” model. The Academic Success Teacher prioritizes daily workload and at the high school level, will track data including: attendance, passing/failing of academic courses, grad planning, and post-secondary planning for each student grades 10-12; this tracking would be in collaboration with the school counselling department. Based upon tracking, follow-up plans will be communicated, developed, and executed to support academic success. The Academic Success Teacher acts as an Indigenous Leader within the school, sharing knowledge, culture, and ways of knowing with students and staff. All work within this position is designed to enhance Aboriginal student success in SD8.

Embedded within this position are cultural supports, including but not limited to the following: relationship building with community, relationship building with families, creating opportunities to share knowledge, history and diversity of Aboriginal BC within the school building.

The Academic Success Teacher will support Aboriginal EA positions and Aboriginal Youth and Family Worker Liaison positions within the school and will be a “team lead” for guiding work and Ministry required ABED data tracking. The Academic Success Teacher leads school based ABED team meetings, if applicable.

The Academic Success Teacher will work as part of the larger Aboriginal Education team in SD8 and will attend ABED District staff meetings to share reflections, grow strengths, and stay current on district initiatives.
