Onware is a Houston and Edmonton-based company originally founded as a spin-off of the University of Alberta in 2002. We have extensive technical, data, analytics and software knowledge clients need, and decades of practice applying it especially within the construction industry.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Power BI Data Architect / Data Engineer. The individual will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining the backend infrastructures that supports our clients’ data processing and analytics applications. The ideal candidate can be located in Canada or US and will have a strong background in:
- Microsoft data technologies (Power BI, SQL Server, Azure, Fabric).
- The pros and cons of different architectural choices and when to use which combinations.
- Building data pipelines - data discovery, ingestion, transformation, flows, & storage.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designing and developing scalable backend systems for data processing, storage, retrieval, and reporting.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate backend systems with frontend applications.
- Designing data models and database schemas that support business requirements and ensure data consistency.
- Implementing data security and privacy best practices to ensure data integrity and compliance.
- Optimizing data storage and retrieval processes for performance and efficiency.
- Developing and maintaining APIs for data access and manipulation.
- Monitoring and analyzing system performance and making recommendations for improvements.
- Writing and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation for backend systems.
- Performing root cause analysis for system failures and implementing long-term fixes.
- Troubleshooting and resolving backend issues in a timely manner.
- Participating in code reviews and providing constructive feedback to team members.
- Staying current with emerging technologies and best practices in data engineering.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer / Data Architect or similar role, with a focus on data management.
- Solid experience with Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, SQL Server, and Oracle.
- Proficiency in at least two or more of the following cloud data platforms: Google BigQuery, Amazon Athena, Snowflake.
- Experience in setting up real-time or near real-time streaming data.
- Demonstrated expertise in building data pipelines for batch processing ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) and ETL processes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical requirements into non-technical terms.
- Proven track record of successfully delivering data projects from conception to implementation.
Bonuses:
- Experience handling IoT sensor data and integrating it into data workflows.
- Familiarity with JD Edwards, eCMS, Oracle, and IBM I Series systems would be advantageous.
- Hands-on experience with Databricks for data analytics and processing.
