Kackaamen Teacher Advisor

Job Description:

School District 70 is seeking a full time teacher to work in the Kackaamin Family Development Center as part of a multi- disciplinary team. The successful candidate will be working with some of the most vulnerable children and youth from our surrounding communities and province-wide. The successful candidate MUST have a willingness to be flexible in delivering teaching curriculum and be able to deliver education services on an individual basis, meeting students where they are at emotionally and physically. The successful candidate will be able to employ a willingness to learn and practice Indigenous cultural sensitivity, as well as other ongoing professional development related training opportunities. The successful candidate must be willing to partake in all cultural ceremonies on and off site, and an understanding of intergenerational trauma and the impacts of the Residential School Legacy as it exists today.

The successful candidate will partake in planning for children, youth and their families prior to intake as well as partaking in collaborating within and outside of our agency for after-care planning of students and families upon completion our 6 week residential program. The successful candidate will be able to give and receive feedback as part of the team, and will possess the keen ability to navigate the many systems that affect our vulnerable participants and advocate for adequate services during and after programming. An understanding of mental health and child development is also a key competency for this position.

This position will require support for academic work provided by the children’s home school as well as social and emotional support. The grades of the children tend to be elementary but at times secondary students arrive. The successful candidate should also be prepared to develop short units when children arrive without work from their sending school.

Qualifications:

· Experience working with First Nations students.

· Experience in providing services through a trauma-informed lens.

· A Valid BC Teaching Certificate

· A Valid BC Driver’s License

· Additional coursework in counselling (psychology) and addictions

· Experience working at a residential treatment facility
