Seasonal - Leadhand, Environmental Services Posting Status – Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants. Job Details – Temporary Full Time (CUPE 136T). Duration – One contract lasting up to eight months, commencing in March and ending in November. Closing Date – Applications must be received by 11:59pm on January 16, 2026. Reporting to the Supervisor, Cemeteries and Environmental Services, this position is a working Leadhand role that assists the Supervisor in the planning and scheduling of all resources necessary to conduct parks maintenance and sanitation. Job Responsibilities Plan, coordinate, execute and evaluate parks maintenance and sanitation programs, services, and processes. Develop new and/or revise relevant policies and standard operating procedures for the section as required. Delegate work assignments to staff and students ensuring appropriate scheduling and quality control. Ensure work is performed efficiently and effectively in accordance with Town or Department maintenance standards, specifications and other legislative requirements. Hire students and monitor performance including initiating corrective action and/or progressive discipline when required; assist with seasonal hiring as necessary. Consult closely with the Supervisor and/or Manager to report progress, resolve issues and refine planning. Ensure facilities are prepared according to permit requirements for special events. Respond to and investigate public inquiries, by‑law issues and initiate work orders as appropriate. Monitor and maintain expenditures and oversee allocation of resources (financial, employee hours, etc.). Assist with budgets preparation, program development and staff training development. Maintain daily records accurately for the purpose of tracking, reporting and documenting maintenance activities and adjust schedules as necessary. Ensure all equipment is operated competently, safely and maintained in good condition, ensuring proper documentation for repair of defective equipment. Keep current with ongoing technical, cultural and procedural improvements in parks maintenance and sanitation. Train and guide staff, students, part‑time staff and volunteers involved in activities. Support information dissemination, training and communication for parks construction, maintenance, sanitation and special event activities. Consult with, and oversee the work of, contractors and other service providers. Analyze information, data, progress etc. and look for means of improving parks construction, maintenance, sanitation and special event program/activity performance. Represent the Corporation and Department in a professional, courteous and respectful manner in all dealings with the public, other groups and associations. May perform the role of Stand‑in Supervisor on occasions when the supervisor is not available. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum of high school graduation; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 2‑3 years previous related experience including scheduling of seasonal and student staff and safe operation of related machines and equipment. Certifications in forklift, chainsaw, 0‑8 ton crane operation, load securement and confined space entry are an asset. Proven experience in directing and assigning work to others, including training and monitoring performance. Computer proficiency in Word and Excel; ability to develop and maintain an electronic scheduling database and use e‑mail, internet and GIS. Demonstrated leadership, effective communication (oral and written), customer service and problem‑solving skills. Proficient time‑management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties. Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team. Must possess mechanical aptitude, understanding of the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Must hold a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s Licence Class DZ (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record demonstrating responsible and safe driving behaviour; applicants with six or more points are ineligible. Must be willing to work a 40‑hour workweek in varying weather conditions and be available for shift work, stand‑by, weekends, nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays when required.
