About the Centre: Athabasca University and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) have formed the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University. The mission of the Centre is to provide an inclusive, accessible and comprehensive education in architectural studies with a focus on environmental sustainability. This is Canada's first online school of architecture, and it offers a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Architecture. The Centre is also a component of the renewal of the RAIC Syllabus, which constitutes an alternative path to professional licensure as an architect in Canada. The RAIC Syllabus is an experience-based, work-study program culminating in the RAIC Syllabus Diploma in Architecture. The RAIC Syllabus consists of studio, work experience and academic components taken while working under the supervision of a licensed Canadian Architect. The studio and work experience (offered by RAIC) together with academic courses (offered by Athabasca University) fulfill the requirements of the RAIC Syllabus Professional Diploma in Architecture. The Position: Athabasca University is hiring a 0.2 FTE Academic Coordinator with expertise in broad areas of architecture. The Academic Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the teaching, administration, and maintenance of the following Graduate courses: APST 505: Advanced Structures ARCH 653: Contemporary Architectural Theory and Research The Academic Coordinator's duties include handling student issues (grade appeals, course challenges, exam reviews, exam delivery when required, transfer credit assessment requests, and academic misconduct), assessments, course revision, assisting students and marking. This term part‑time position is responsible for coordinating and teaching at the RAIC Centre for Architecture within the Faculty of Science and Technology at Athabasca University. The position requires a focus on theory and technical studies in architecture, particularly related to Contemporary Architectural Theory and Research and Advanced Structural Engineering. This position will be part of a team responsible for teaching, implementation and development of the B.Sc. in Architecture, Graduate Diploma in Architecture programs as well as a new Master of Architecture program. Responsibilities Marking of assignments and assessments for assigned courses. Ensures the proper application of the University's academic policies and regulations to assigned courses, and deals with student complaints, problems and inquiries related to these courses as required; Responds to inquiries from University staff and students regarding all aspects of assigned courses; Collaborates with faculty to develop short and long-term plans for the development and delivery needs of the assigned courses; Participates in the processes necessary for program reviews as required; Promotes the programs and courses to target sectors with a view to attracting additional enrollments and graduates, to generate new revenues and contacts, and establishing appropriate partnerships; Participates in the representation of the Centre at relevant professional bodies and events; Provides support to advisory committees as required; Work with University Relations to foster program student and alumni activities within the context of the Athabasca University Students' Union and Alumni Association constitutions. Qualifications General The successful candidate will bring a distinguished record of creative accomplishments in architecture and/or engineering as related to the built environment, distinction in professional practice, and demonstrated success in promoting excellence in teaching and scholarship. They will also have an understanding of the structure of architectural practice and professional education in Canada. Specific Educational and professional credentials Professional degree from an accredited architecture or engineering program; an advanced post-professional degree (Master or PhD) in a related field is preferred Licensure as an architect or engineer in a Canadian jurisdiction, or be eligible for licensure as an architect or engineer in a Canadian jurisdiction. Extensive experience in online learning and familiarity with AU-specific digital teaching and administration technologies (Brightspace, GreyMatter, Grades, Much Learning, MS Teams, SharePoint) would also be desired assets. English proficiency is a must. Areas of Expertise The Centre provides an architectural education that is based on the Procedures and Standards for Assessment of Non-accredited Degrees or Diplomas established by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board. In particular, the successful candidate will demonstrate and be responsible for academic and professional expertise related to theory and technical studies in architecture.
