Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Loans Platform) Affirm Greater St. John's Metropolitan Area Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer for the Loans Platform team, responsible for our core loans products. We want you to guide the team to scale the product by 100x and add new features to make our loans more compelling and accessible. What You’ll Do Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open‑ended problems, and ensuring everyone is supported throughout delivery. Collaborate with product, design & analytics during the product development lifecycle, articulating technical constraints and partnering on decisions that consider risks and trade‑offs. Identify project, process, technology or business issues proactively, advocate, and lead in solving them. Support operations and availability of the team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” & on‑call efforts. Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, and advocating beyond the team through writing and tech talks. Help develop talent on the team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example. What We Look For 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin. Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes. Experience defining a technical plan for a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple and extensible design; write high‑quality, easily understood code. Proficient at making significant changes in a large code base and developed tools/practices to enable safe changes. Ownership of your growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager and stakeholders. Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team. Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Compensation & Benefits Pay Grade – N; Equity Grade – 6. Base pay range per year: $150,000 – $200,000 CAD. Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include monthly stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits (including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents).
