Job Overview Université Laval, Department of Wood and Forest Sciences of the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics, is the only university in Quebec to offer undergraduate programmes in forestry and wood engineering that lead to the Quebec Order of Forest Engineers or the Quebec Order of Engineers. The department is responsible for the integrated multi‑faculty bachelor's degree in natural and managed environments, the only graduate programme in agroforestry in Canada, and hosts 35 full‑time professors and lecturers as well as research chairs and consortiums. Job Description In accordance with its development plan and to support a key sector of Quebec’s economy, the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences is seeking a professor in maple syrup production. This field, at the intersection of economic, environmental, and cultural considerations, represents a strategic area for sustainable forestry. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in French at all levels and contribute to the departmental programmes, in particular the bachelor's degree in Forest Management and Environment, Forest Operations and Natural and Managed Environments, as well as those in Agroforestry, Agronomy and Agroeconomy. The candidate will also develop an innovative research programme aimed at addressing the current challenges of the maple syrup industry. Teaching and research activities will focus on the following areas: Physiology and ecophysiology of maple and fundamental mechanisms of sap flow. Impact of climate change on the health of sugarbushes and the dynamics of sap flow. Biotic and abiotic factors affecting maple syrup yield and the resilience of sugar maple stands. Sap collection systems to optimise efficiency and reduce losses in maple syrup production. Parameters influencing the quality of sap and syrup. Development of innovative management practices for sustainable and integrated resource management. Responsibilities Teaching in French in sugarbush management and maple syrup production and related fields (e.g., ecophysiology, tree physiology, forest ecology) at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Development of training activities (graduate‑level courses and continuing education for professionals in the field). Securing research funding from granting agencies and external partners to support research activities. Conducting research and supervising graduate students on topics related to the fields listed above. Development of teaching and research activities at the Saint‑Augustin‑de‑Desmaures forest domain of Université Laval. Collaboration with existing research groups, notably the Canada Research Chair in Silviculture Adapted to Climate Change and the Research Chair in Maple Syrup Production and Sugarbush Management. Participation in departmental, faculty, university and multi‑stakeholder committees. Selection Criteria Hold a bachelor’s degree in forestry, biology, agronomy or a related discipline, and a doctoral degree from a recognised university in a relevant field (or be close to completing it). Demonstrated expertise in forest ecophysiology. In‑depth knowledge of technical, ecological and economic issues related to maple syrup production in Quebec. Demonstrated skills in university teaching and knowledge mobilisation. Demonstrated ability to secure the funding required to establish a research programme from public or private granting agencies. Demonstrated ability to design independent research projects, develop a coherent research vision and provide scientific leadership. Present a vision for the position in terms of university teaching and research and propose concrete actions to achieve it. Eligibility for membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs forestiers du Québec (OIFQ) is considered an asset. Conditions Salary according to the current collective agreement.
