Overview Position: Teaching Associate Pool in Department of English (Academic Year 26/27) Job no: • Work type: Teaching Associate • Location: Humboldt • Categories: Unit 11 - UAW - California Alliance of Academic Student Workers, Temporary, Time Varies Term of Appointment: Academic Year 2026/2027 (Fall or Spring, or both) • Hours of Appointment: up to 0.20 time base (up to 8 hour/week) • Pay Rate: up to approx. $655.00/month • Positions Available: Multiple Department: English Responsibilities Teaching Associates (TAs) typically are responsible for providing classroom and/or laboratory instruction, making assignments to students, preparing course materials, administering examinations, assessing student performance, tutoring students and determining course grades. Also, incumbents may assist faculty with field experience, supervision, simulation exercises and/or research projects. Teaching Associates (TAs) will be appointed to teach at least a single section of English 104: Composition & Rhetoric in the fall semester. If hired, Teaching Associates (TAs) may have the opportunity to attend paid orientation sessions, depending upon availability and budget. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline to which the individual is assigned. Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment and ability to instruct and evaluate students. Education: Education equivalent to or completion of the requirements for a bachelor's degree and concurrent admission to or enrollment in a graduate degree program of the university in the discipline to which the individual is assigned. Experience: Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work. Note: Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of Cal Poly Humboldt. Department Hiring Criteria Job # 252: English: Teaching Associate Minimum/Preferred Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION: Graduate students enrolled in Cal Poly Humboldt's Applied English Studies Master of Arts program who have demonstrated an interest in, and commitment to, the teaching of writing are eligible to apply. TAs must be enrolled in the English MA program during their semester teaching. Applicants must not have any incomplete grades (“I”) on their transcripts. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants with a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population will be given preference. Additional training, such as completion of ENGL 581: Becoming a College-Level Instructor and ENGL 450: Tutoring Developing Writers or equivalent coursework is encouraged but not required. Preference will be given to first-time qualified applicants. Students brand new to the MA in English program (i.e., in their first semester) will be considered for a TA position if they show evidence of preparation for teaching first-year composition at the undergraduate level through coursework and/or successful teaching experience.
