The Opportunity Company, Department: Nova Scotia Power, Power Production - Hydro, Wind & Solar Location: Lakeside, NS - Halifax - On site Type of Employment: Regular, Full-Time Closing Date: January 30, 2026 We are currently seeking a Senior Dam Safety Engineer to join our Power Production – Hydro, Wind & Solar team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Manager, Dam Safety, you will provide expertise and leadership on all matters related to dam safety at Nova Scotia Power. Key Responsibilities Work at various Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI) Hydro locations to support operational Dam Safety and Public Safety Around Dams items, such as monitoring, inspections, and repairs. Provide technical guidance and decisions on engineering standards for water‑retaining and hydraulic control structures. Continue the development, implementation, and management of the Dam Safety Management System, Dam Emergency Plans, the Dam Safety Risk Registry, and other internal dam safety and Public Safety Around Dams tools. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective communication and industry best practices across work groups. Lead long‑range planning and implementation of dam safety improvements to ensure regulatory compliance and risk management. Conduct and review dam inspections, manage deficiency lists, and lead Dam Safety Reviews (DSRs) and Flood Studies. Support emergency response efforts at hydro sites and provide leadership during critical events. Stay current with Canadian Dam Safety Guidelines, provincial and federal environmental regulations, and industry standards. You will be responsible for your personal safety, that of co‑workers, and those under your direction by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will always hold safety paramount, for yourself and others, and ensure Safety Program requirements are met. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to NSPI’s Environmental Management System processes and initiatives. This role will require you to travel to various locations across Nova Scotia for work at Hydro sites and other NSPI locations. You will be expected to manage your own time, traveling outside of regular working hours as required, and occasionally stay overnight. You must be available for emergency after‑hour consultation and emergency restoration work. Required Skills and Qualifications Master’s degree preferred in Geotechnical Engineering (or related discipline). Minimum eight (8) years of related industry experience in dam safety, hydraulic structures, or geotechnical engineering. Hands‑on experience in field operations and dam emergency response. Proven troubleshooting and problem resolution skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities. Proven ability to support front‑line staff and lead collaborative projects and initiatives. Experience in executing all stages of technical and construction project life cycles. Strong technical knowledge in flood studies, hydraulic forces, and dam safety practices. Strong interpersonal skills and stakeholder engagement experience. Familiarity with Canadian environmental regulations and compliance requirements. Proven ability to manage consultants and provide technical expertise for regulatory filings. Must be, or eligible to be, a member of Engineers Nova Scotia. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to hydro sites across the province. Additional Competencies Experience with risk assessments, instrumentation, and hydraulic modeling. Knowledge of GIS and drafting software is an asset. Proactive problem‑solving and ability to work independently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
