Senior Engineer Operations Design & Engineer Job Description Some of what you will do: Reporting to the Senior Manager, Supply Chain Strategy & Engineering, the Senior Engineer, ODE will contribute to the design, evaluation, and implementation of distribution and fulfillment-related processes and technologies. This individual will play a key role in researching and supporting automation initiatives, leading targeted improvement efforts, and working closely with stakeholders across operations, IT, and external vendors to bring engineering solutions to life. This role is ideal for a hands-on professional with a passion for operational excellence and applied problem solving. Specifically, You Will: Design and optimize distribution solutions across Staples Canada’s network, including facility layouts, slotting strategies, equipment selection, and operational cost modeling for manual, mechanized, and automated environments. Evaluate and recommend warehouse technologies and automation, such as WMS/WCS integrations, ASRS, AMRs, AGVs, robotics, pick-to-light, voice, and conveyance systems, supported by clear cost/benefit and ROI analyses. Support solution implementation and continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and with strong stakeholder satisfaction. Analyze operational data and requirements to build modular, dynamic cost models aligned with business objectives, timelines, and scalability needs. Drive productivity and efficiency improvements through time studies, engineered labor standards, LEAN methodologies, and actionable improvement plans with site teams. Provide hands-on technical support for site-level enhancements, including re-slotting, racking redesign, material handling equipment selection, and system validation. Collaborate cross-functionally and with external partners, contributing to documentation, training, standardized workflows, and the capture of lessons learned to support a culture of continuous improvement. Some of what you need: Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, operations, or a related field required. 2–5 years of experience in logistics, warehousing, or automation engineering. Hands-on exposure to warehouse automation systems, robotics, or data-driven workflow improvements. Proficiency in data analysis, process improvement projects, and workflow analysis. Familiarity with lean practices, Six Sigma tools, and warehouse management systems. Advanced proficiency in SQL, Power BI, Looker, Tableau, Excel (VBA + Power Tools), Visio, AutoCAD LT, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience in e-commerce logistics or 3PL environments is an asset.
