ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN POSITION

Steer Environmental Associates Ltd. is looking for a motivated individual looking to join a team in a flexible work environment and an opportunity to break into the environmental consulting industry. Steer is an environmental consulting firm based in Nelson, BC, with resources and project work distributed throughout the West and East Kootenay regions. We offer a broad range of environmental services including hazardous materials assessment, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials awareness training, compliance and air monitoring, radon monitoring, environmental monitoring, and contaminated sites-related services. Our group is looking to provide an opportunity to a post-secondary graduate in sciences, hygiene, engineering, or a related field of study that is keen for an opportunity to start a career in consulting.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Environmental sampling (soil, groundwater, surface water, vapour indoor air, mould).
  • Sampling and reporting on hazardous material assessments for a variety of materials including asbestos, lead, mould, and silica.
  • Collecting bulk material and air samples in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and analytical methods.
  • Compliance monitoring on abatement projects; conducting visual inspections, and air monitoring.
  • Deploying radon monitoring instruments in residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional settings.
  • Completion of laboratory chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Laboratory analytical data management and interpretation.
  • Technical report preparation.
  • Quantitative analysis of airborne fibers via Phase Contrast Microscope (PCM) via NIOSH 7400 Method.
  • Qualitative and quantitative characterization of mould spores via PCM analysis.
  • Assist with preparation of risk assessment, exposure control plan, and/or safe work procedure compliance documentation satisfying WorkSafeBC requirements for clients.
  • Knowledge of building components and systems is an asset.


EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree, preferably in a scientific, occupational/industrial hygiene, or related discipline.
  • Working knowledge of local, provincial, and federal regulatory requirements for hazardous materials management considered an asset.
  • Successful completion of the WorkSafeBC Level-S Surveyor Safety, AHERA 24-hour Asbestos Inspector course, or equivalent training would be an asset.
  • Formal and on-the-job training opportunities will be provided.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-3 years of experience in environmental consulting with hazardous materials / industrial hygiene / engineering technology experience preferred.
  • Eligible for professional or technical registration/designation.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License.
  • Access to reliable vehicle for work-related travel.
  • Ability to climb ladders, lift up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Ability to perform under adverse conditions (poor weather, time constraints).
  • Ability and willingness to frequently travel within the region and work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as and when needed.
  • Confident and independent worker.
  • Confident and capable verbal communicator and technical writer.
  • Familiar with use of hand and power tools.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and PDF programs.
