As Team Lead & Managing Editor of the Premier's Writing Team within the Premier's Events Unit in Cabinet Office Communications, you will guide some of the most visible and influential communications in Ontario, including the development of the Premier of Ontario's public messaging. This signature role in the Ontario Public Service (OPS) is unmatched in profile, scope and access to subject matter that spans the full breadth of public policy in the province. The Division Communications Priorities & Forecasting serves the Premier's Office and partners by driving integration and strategic coordination for government priorities, including supporting Premier's announcements, event logistics and planning, as well as providing leadership and support in the coordination and delivery of government communications. About the Job Guide a skilled writing team: Provide editorial leadership and coaching to a high‑performing team of Senior Writers in developing and executing strategies that align with ministry and government priorities, including thoughtful, substantive feedback that strengthens content, voice and coherence. Advise senior leaders: Provide strategic advice and expert guidance to senior leaders in Cabinet Office and the Premier's Office on communications approaches for major initiatives and emerging issues ensuring advice aligns with government direction and reflects the Premier's voice. Develop superior‑quality media materials: Employ tact and political acuity to support the rollout of high‑profile government announcements by overseeing the planning, researching and writing of Premier's media products, including news releases, speeches, media Q&A and other communications products. This includes assigning work, managing timelines and providing critical review and proofreading expertise. Personally handle the most sensitive, complex or high‑stakes editorial assignments. Champion a culture of curiosity and factual accuracy: Work across the Ontario Public Service to collaborate with partners, coordinate project requirements, ensure factual accuracy of communications products and manage all approvals and delivery timelines. Build cross‑government relationships: Leverage superior relationship management and customer service skills to establish strong working relationships with the Premier's Office, Cabinet Office colleagues and ministry partners. Steward editorial resources: Develop and maintain a range of trackers and files that support writing excellence, including messaging guides, research best‑practices and editorial tools. Qualifications Leadership Experience guiding writers and managing editorial workflows, from assigning projects and supervising work to ensuring timely delivery of the highest‑quality communications products. Ability to build consensus, offer clear direction and elevate the work of others. Ability to conceptualize and implement integrated communications strategies that align with government priorities. Comfort providing thoughtful, strategic advice to senior officials, including the Deputy Minister, Assistant Deputy Ministers and senior staff in the Premier's Office. Ability to chair meetings, facilitate discussions and negotiate consensus among diverse groups. Knowledge and Skills Expert writing and editing skills with an ability to translate complex information into clear, impactful stories with a strong sense of narrative structure and voice. Skill in rapidly absorbing and synthesizing new information. Ability to keep pace with the news cycle, discern newsworthy content and anticipate audience needs and questions. Proficiency in communication planning methods and practices. Project management and time management skills to handle multiple communication projects within tight timelines and in response to changing priorities. In‑depth understanding of government and ministry priorities, policies, and programs, and a genuine curiosity to learn about a wide range of programs and policies across government and how all the puzzle pieces fit together. Manage multi‑ministry, multi‑stakeholder communications initiatives. Relationship Management / Communication Skills Engage with the Premier's Office, management, staff, and various government offices to seek direction, provide advice and gather information. Build and maintain positive relationships with the Premier's Office, clients and government contacts to plan and develop communications products and strategies. Produce high‑quality communications materials such as news releases, media advisories, statements, remarks, and briefing notes for the Premier's Office. Exercise tact, discretion and political acuity related to sensitive and contentious issues. Analytical Thinking and Planning / Coordinating Project management, time management, research, analytical and organizational skills and can handle multiple projects simultaneously to meet tight and competing deadlines. Analyze information from various sources to quickly connect dots and identify contentious and emerging issues. Recommend courses of action on complex and sensitive issues to senior staff.
