Duties/Responsibilities Provides support to the Engineering and Wastewater Programs group responsible for administrating the operations and maintenance of the Region’s wastewater treatment plants. Assignments may include wastewater sampling and analysis or SCADA and process control narrative design and support. Gathers and compiles related data from multiple sources, including controls systems and SCADA. Reviews technical information (e.g., process control narratives, P&IDs) and prepares technical memorandums and reports. Researches, monitors, and evaluates trends and technological developments. Participates in meetings with Regional staff, agencies, the public, government, and private organizations, as well as neighbourhood and business associations. Travels to waste water treatment facilities on a daily or weekly basis, based on assignment. Works in an office environment approximately 60-80% of the time. Work requires heavy visual concentration, prolonged focus on a computer screen, attention to detail, and manual dexterity. Works outdoors approximately 20-40% of the time at waste treatment facilities. Takes precautions to mitigate risks when working with/around weather, odours, equipment/machinery, sanitation, smells, sounds, and chemicals. Outside work requires considerable walking, standing, and stooping when touring plants; attention to detail and constant awareness are necessary when working in the vicinity of machinery in facilities Performs related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of design requirements, procedures, policies, and terminology pertaining to water and wastewater management and bio-solids, normally acquired through current enrollment in a University Program in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Knowledge of control systems including PLCs and SCADA. Knowledge of and ability to follow policies, procedures, related legislation and standards (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Aggregate Resources Act, Canadian Standards Act, Ministry of Environment guidelines and regulations, health and safety). Analytical, problem solving, organizational, and mathematical skills to gather, compile, and review technical information; research, monitor, and evaluate trends; conduct sampling and laboratory work; interpret regulations, legislation, and technical plans; and conduct site visits. Ability to clearly and concisely communicate and exchange technical information to others, including Regional staff, agencies, government staff, and businesses. Ability to prepare and conduct presentations to Regional staff. Ability to participate as an effective team member. Computer skills with ability to use software such as the Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, a document management system, and the Internet. Familiarity with SCADA systems (e.g., GE’s iFix software, Rockwell Platform and software packages). Ability to read and interpret policies, procedures, and technical information and designs. Ability to write technical briefs, correspondence, and complex and detailed reports for staff and management, consultants, committees. Ability to travel to locations within the Region. Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
