Position Purpose The primary objective of the Database Reliability Engineer is to provide expertise across database and data platform activities and ensure delivery of critical database workloads within the North American Operations Teams. This position is hands-on with its own workload and will participate in all database responsibilities within the managed environments spanning private and public clouds. Responsibilities and Key Activities Managing and maintaining databases, ensuring they operate efficiently, securely, and reliably within private and public cloud environments. Designing and implementing databases, securing data, backing up and restoring data, monitoring performance, and optimizing database operations. Optimising manual effort through automation via service-based platforms (e.g., AWS Oracle RDS, AWS SQL Server RDS, AWS PostgreSQL RDS, and managed Apache Cassandra). Operating queries resulting from query and tuning analysis of Orion Health products. Providing on-call support outside of regular business hours on a rota across the North American team. Completing and leading others in meeting timelines and deadlines. Staying current with relevant technology, especially emerging data platforms useful for tasks and projects. Business Unit North American Managed Services This unit contributes to Orion Health's purpose of enabling client success by introducing and maintaining North American managed environments, policies and procedures in line with ITIL-aligned standards, and improving service management focus for North American customers. Key Relationships Internal : Support & Cloud Engineering Director, NA; Operations Service Desk Lead; Service Management; Privacy & Security team; Product owners; Developers; PSA teams External : Customers, Suppliers/partners and Vendors Essential Functions Customer support and internal support & issue resolution Daily monitoring, management, troubleshooting and issue resolution of database and non-database related infrastructure Meeting client SLAs and internal OLAs related to data platforms and databases Participate in project meetings and planning for customer migrations and implementations Participate in on-call schedules for Operations support Provide and share database expertise with internal Orion Health teams Plan training and knowledge sharing to keep technical knowledge current Plan and lead cross-training and knowledge transfer as necessary Process improvement Regular review, planning, and audit of SaaS database infrastructure Maintain knowledge of the technology landscape Behavioural and Technical Capabilities Database Design and Implementation Designing and building databases: Create database structures to store data based on user needs and business requirements. Translating logical models into physical designs: Convert conceptual designs into actual database structures. Collaborating with developers and architects: Work with team members to understand requirements and ensure the database meets needs. Database Management and Maintenance Managing database objects: Create, modify, and manage tables, indexes, and other database objects. Monitoring database performance: Track performance metrics, identify bottlenecks, and optimize queries. Backing up and restoring data: Implement backup and recovery strategies to prevent data loss. Ensuring data availability: Ensure database availability for authorized users and minimize downtime. Maintaining and updating databases: Apply patches, upgrades, and updates to keep software and systems running smoothly. Data archiving: Move inactive or historical data to long-term storage. Disaster recovery planning: Implement strategies to safeguard data and ensure availability in unforeseen circumstances. Data Security Managing access controls: Control who can access data and what they can see. Implementing and improving security measures: Protect database from unauthorized access and threats. Monitoring for security incidents: Track security events and respond to breaches or threats. Other Responsibilities Troubleshooting and resolving issues: Diagnose and fix database problems (e.g., performance, errors). Providing support to users: Guide users on how to use the database and access data. Capacity planning: Assess future data storage and processing needs. Documentation and training: Create database documentation and train team members. ETL: Manage extraction, transformation, and loading of data into the database. Relevant Experience Minimum of 5+ years experience in enterprise database support Experience with physical, virtual and cloud environments Hands-on experience implementing and supporting highly available, redundant DB solutions (RAC, AWS, etc.) Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Experience in implementing disaster recovery of data platforms Experience in code migration, database change management and full data lifecycle management Experience implementing and managing Oracle RDS and MS-SQL in AWS Experience with Amazon S3 Experience with Apache Cassandra and non-SQL data platforms is a plus Experience with automation, configuration management and orchestration; Infrastructure as code (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Kubernetes, CloudFormation, Terraform, etc.) is required Excellent communication and organization skills Education and Qualifications Technical certifications demonstrating database technology excellence are highly preferred (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server DBA, AWS Certified Database, Oracle DBA) A Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field is desired #J-18808-Ljbffr
