Responsibilities Perform preliminary inspection and analysis of grain samples. Grade grain samples. Draw representative grain samples. Determine the protein content of wheat. Maintain records of inspection data. Inspect equipment. Perform other related duties as assigned. The Grain Inspector Development Program (GIDP) trains individuals to qualify as working level Grain Inspectors. Trainees participate in a modular curriculum of classroom learning and hands‑on practicum at busy Canadian ports. They will develop technical and behavioral competencies and may progress from Trainee (PI‑CGC‑01) to full working‑level Grain Inspector (PI‑CGC‑03). Trainees are on probation for the duration of the program and may be released at any time for failure to meet expectations. Successful completion of all GIDP components is a condition of employment. Trainees will work in a heavy industrial environment with exposure to moving railcars, automated equipment, dust, noise, bird excrement, heights, and rodents. Employees must use PPE as required; allergies must be controlled with masks or medication. Intent of the Process A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be created from this process and could be used to fill identical or similar positions within the Canadian Grain Commission. Partially qualified means candidates will be considered except for language and security profiles, which will be assessed later if they are considered for a nomination. Conditions of Employment Successful completion of the development program to full working level (PI‑CGC‑03) within the probationary period. Obtaining and maintaining the appropriate security clearance. Valid driver’s license. Lifting grain samples (up to 20 kg), climbing ladders, and working at heights. Exposure to grain dust/soil, outdoor conditions, and an industrial environment. Frequent overtime, shifts, and short‑notice work. Frequent travel as required. Adherence to CGC and industry safety standards and procedures. Essential Requirements Education Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/or experience. Behavioral Competencies Demonstrating integrity and respect. Working effectively with others. Showing initiative and being action‑oriented. Thinking things through. Abilities Analyzing and solving problems. Reasoning skills and judgment. Differentiating color. Experience Experience working in the grain industry. Experience with grading grain. Language Requirements May be assessed at a later date.
