Resource Planning Senior Engineer – Energy Planning Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/week) No. of positions: 1 BC Hydro is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineer to join our Energy Planning department. The successful candidate will work with specialist engineers from Energy Planning and Transmission planning in playing a critical role in shaping the future of BC’s electricity system by developing transmission resource options, evaluating non‑wires alternatives, and supporting the integration of renewable energy resources. The successful candidate will also develop regional and system load resource balances, prepare data inputs for transmission studies, and develop generation and transmission long‑run marginal costs. What you’ll do Identify and assess transmission resource options for long‑term system planning. Develop and evaluate non‑wires alternatives (NWAs) to traditional transmission and distribution infrastructure, including distributed energy resources, demand‑side management, and energy storage. Work with engineers in transmission planning to provide technical insights on the integration of renewable energy resources (e.g., wind, solar, hydro) from a transmission system perspective. Prepare generation resource data for transmission studies and participate in results verification. Develop load resource balances for the BC Hydro system and for sub‑regions within the system, taking into consideration transmission planning criteria. Develop long run marginal costs for both generation and transmission. Participate in cross‑functional teams and working groups to align planning efforts across departments. Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders. Support regulatory filings and engagement processes related to transmission and resource planning. Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies and trends in transmission and energy systems. Ensure planning activities align with BC Hydro’s safety, sustainability, and Indigenous engagement principles. What you bring Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (strong preference for Electrical Engineering). Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in British Columbia or eligibility for immediate registration. Minimum 8 years of experience in transmission planning, distribution planning, energy systems analysis, or related fields. Strong understanding of transmission system planning principles, including load flow, stability, and contingency analysis, and up‑to‑date knowledge of NERC TPL standards. Knowledge of non‑wires alternatives and their application in utility planning is preferred. Familiarity with renewable energy integration and its impact on transmission systems. Experience with power system modeling tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or equivalent. Knowledge of engineering economics and principles of long‑run marginal costs. Experience working in cross‑functional teams and managing multi‑disciplinary projects. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences. Understanding of BC Hydro’s transmission infrastructure and planning processes or similar utility systems. Knowledge of regulatory and policy frameworks related to transmission and energy planning in BC. Ability to identify and evaluate emerging technologies supporting grid modernization. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Commitment to safety, sustainability, and Indigenous engagement. What we offer A minimum of 15 paid vacation days.
