Senior Artificial Intelligence Backend Developer Toronto, ON, Canada Description Our client, a well-funded Toronto-based startup working toward building the first commercially viable quantum computer, is seeking a Senior AI Backend Developer. This role sits at the intersection of AI, system design, and scientific research, integrating generative AI into advanced R&D methodologies. You will design and develop AI-driven research systems, build scalable pipelines for unstructured data, and collaborate with world-class researchers, engineers, and scientists to accelerate innovation. Key responsibilities include developing SDKs/APIs, automating processes, and ensuring robust, production-ready systems using Python, Postgres, Docker, Terraform, AWS, and GitHub. Requirements BSc in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, or a related field. 4+ years of SWE experience building AI/ML tools in a scientific/engineering research environment 1+ years of experience in at least one of these areas: agentic systems, LLM/RAG-based assistants, large-scale NN training and deployment. Strong knowledge of queueing system design Practical experience querying, maintaining, and migrating SQL databases. Proven background in building and deploying production systems on AWS Diverse experience with generative AI, including prompting techniques, knowledge retrieval, and agentic systems Working knowledge of systematic validation and benchmarking of LLMs. Solid understanding of common ML concepts Familiarity building CI/CD workflows using technologies like GitHub Actions Knowledge of the full lifecycle of software development, including version control, code review, testing, CI/CD, logging, monitoring, debugging, and documentation Adept at working with Linux shell, CLI tools, Git, and GitHub Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Curiosity and enthusiasm about new and unfamiliar technologies with ability to learn technical/scientific concepts quickly with minimal direction Strong communication and collaboration skills Basic knowledge of physics and linear algebra Responsibilities As a Senior AI Developer, you will integrate generative AI into advanced R&D to accelerate the development of the world’s first commercially viable quantum computer. You’ll design and maintain agentic AI research systems, build pipelines to process complex data, and collaborate with researchers and engineers on innovative solutions. You will develop SDKs, APIs, and visualizations, while ensuring high-quality production code through CI/CD and testing. Key technologies include GitHub, Python, Postgres, Docker, Terraform, and AWS.
