Overview Join and lead MongoDB’s Server Programmability team, helping build the core of a distributed database. Server Programmability’s responsibilities include improving local server development experience and velocity, enhancing the programming model, and building low level reusable software components that can be leveraged by other teams working on the database. Our team currently consists of six engineers, located in New York City and fully remote. We operate close to the bottom of the stack and have influence over the performance and robustness of our open source database as well as the development efficiency of the engineering team. We’ve built tooling to support better modularization of the server codebase, migrated server unit testing to an open-source framework, and are evaluating the feasibility of introducing coroutines to the Server codebase. This role can be based remotely in Canada. You’re an ideal candidate if you: You have 2 or more years of experience managing a team of software engineers You have strong technical judgment to guide engineering decisions You have first-hand experience developing complex systems in C++ (such as databases, distributed systems, or high-performance applications) and understand the challenges your team faces You enjoy coaching, career development, and creating growth opportunities for your team You aim to build a diverse, inclusive environment where engineers can do their best work You put the customer first and don’t hesitate to cross team boundaries to find the right solution Responsibilities Lead a team of 5-8 engineers, managing all aspects of people management including hiring, growth, compensation, and performance management Be directly responsible for the results your team delivers Own the definition and execution of the team’s 12-month roadmap Drive improvements to processes and tools, especially those that enable safe changes to high-risk parts of the codebase Use data to inform decisions and measure the impact of work the team ships Guide the team through making complex changes that balance performance against other requirements Handle (or lead the effort to handle) time-sensitive customer escalations Collaborate with stakeholders and engineering teams across the company on large initiatives Work with product managers, program managers, and other teams to specify, prioritize, and deliver new features that delight users Ensure high quality and velocity in the design and implementation of new functionality in the MongoDB server Qualifications 2+ years of experience managing a software engineering team Strong technical judgment for engineering decisions Experience developing complex systems in C++ (databases, distributed systems, high-performance apps) Experience coaching and developing engineers; focus on growth opportunities Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging Customer-centric mindset and ability to collaborate across teams What we offer MongoDB is committed to developing a supportive and enriching culture for everyone, including employee affinity groups, fertility assistance, and a generous parental leave policy.
