We are seeking a Senior Vice President, Head of Casualty for our Canadian operation located in our Toronto office.


Sompo provides a service approach by offering comprehensive multi-line capabilities to accounts in select industries including real estate, hospitality, financial institutions, manufacturing, life sciences, technology, Asian-interest accounts, and professional services. Taking a holistic approach to risk management, the unit offers primary casualty (general liability, commercial auto), excess capacity, and commercial package to small, middle-market and large accounts across target industries in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive execution of underwriting strategy across new and renewal business to identify & retain accounts that provide the greatest opportunity for profit consistent with the business plan and corporate profit objectives
  • Build a team and a culture of empowered field execution that balances autonomy & strategic execution
  • Help team shape strategy for production underwriting activity across Canada and across all mediums and industries; develop a production culture of visibility and consistency in the market
  • Coordinate & align the correct stakeholders to appropriately analyze coverage, structure, and exposures on individual risks
  • In conjunction with CUO and Product Development, build a product suite suitable for target client base
  • Drive ownership of key performance indicators and serve as the “go-to” subject matter expert for new & renewal portfolio performance & forecasting
  • Supports our focus of building strong customer relationships balanced with a strong risk mitigating and compliance-driven culture. Emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite and profitability goals
  • Spearhead brand buildout among new & existing trading partners through both formal & informal settings at a high level and drive underwriting team follow-through in expanding trading relationships
  • Collaborate with management, product, and technical stakeholders to elevate product roadblocks and drive meaningful market innovation. Fluent in Sompo’s products and able to use them effectively in the marketplace
  • Direct the development of competitive intelligence efforts to track peer activity, knowledge of the markets, competitors, industry trends, products, and distribution methods. Constantly strategizes with stakeholders on how to become a best in class, go-to market in target segments
  • Assist in the review and monitoring of relevant accumulation reports. Thoughtfully deploy limits offered and sold to ensure company stays within the pre-determined aggregate for limits


Desired Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 15 years of P&C underwriting experience
  • Excellent task management skills with the ability to balance execution on both long & short term goals
  • Ability to drive culture across national teams and “train the trainers” in developing the qualitative & quantitative traits of strong field teams
  • Empowers decision making in underwriting teams nationally; able to manage messaging clearly & concisely on both challenges & opportunities. Able to direct teams to the right resources internally & inspire them to solve problems
  • Deep underwriting experience and management of a P&L across all lines of business including, liability, auto, excess and commercial package
  • Strong attention to detail & excellent technical aptitude; able to balance both quantitative and qualitative inputs to arrive at reasoned, thoughtful conclusions that guide teams to deeper insights
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Able to interact with a wide range of stakeholders and drive understanding of outcomes & options that appropriately balance competing needs
  • Calm under pressure. Excellent organizational skills, integrity, and great follow-through on tasks; able to switch quickly between problem scopes & unblock challenges
  • Agile mindset to problem solving that considers all possible solutions in a dynamic organization
  • French language is an asset
