The Specialist reports to the Director, Medical Governance and Administration and works closely with other members of the Interior Health (IH) Medical Staff Safety and Wellness (MSSW) working group including the IH Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) Corporate Director and Lead and Doctors of BC representatives. Key priorities include operationalizing and sustaining an occupational health and safety framework aimed at ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in the Physician Master Agreement, supporting wellness and psychological safety initiatives and education, and fostering a comprehensive cultural vision of safety and well‑being for medical staff. addition to strong foundations in occupational health and safety and familiarity with HSMS framework, the Specialist has experience engaging medical staff and recognizes the complexities of leading change within this diverse group. This position will need to be aware of the distinctive features of medical staff culture, the relationship with external partners such as the Doctors of BC, SWITCH BC, Provincial Physician Health & Safety Working Group (PPHSWG), other health authorities, Ministry of Health and the MOA on Physical and Psychological Safety within Physician Master Agreement. The Specialist will also have strong knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulatory standards The Specialist focuses on cultivating robust collaborative relationships with the Occupational Health and Safety regulatory bodies, Medical Affairs and operational Leadership, and external partners. What Will You Work On Develops, implements, monitors, and audits the various components of the Medical Staff Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness (MSOHSW) program for Medical Staff, such as: regulatory compliance hazard and risk management onboarding strategy (including vaccine status, FIT testing, education/training) education and training strategy (including violence prevention) incident reporting Manages related budgets for the MSOHSW program and ensure performance to budgeted plan by monitoring expenditures and recommending and implementing remedial action as required. Provides leadership and direction to team members under their responsibility through effective management techniques (e.g. coaching, mentoring, skill and leadership development, and performance management). Consults with the Director, responsible for staffing functions including recruitment, hiring, ongoing development, performance management, and disciplinary action and termination as required. Monitors and reports out on (i.e. IH MSSW working group, medical and/or medicine portfolio leadership) performance indicators for the MSSW OH&S program and initiatives in compliance with provincial recommendations, and regulatory bodies. Makes recommendations for improvement opportunities as well as remedial action to mitigate organizational risks. Oversees critical incident investigations, including supporting the MSOHSW team, site medical leadership and site Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees to develop and implement corrective actions, ensuring timely completion, and monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of the investigations. Oversees regulatory compliance efforts and consults with internal and external partners (Switch BC, Canadian Medical Association, Doctors of BC, PPHSWG, PHSAG others) on health & safety concerns. Provides guidance to medical leadership and staff on investigations, response and corrective actions as required by and to regulatory agencies and partners. Leads safety and wellness related projects and functions as a resource for Medical Leadership to ensure that processes, workflow, and implementation of changes achieve the desired outcomes. Collaborates with external partners (i.e. SWITCH BC and MoH) on projects and initiatives as required. Leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of projects and processes related to the MSSW OH&S Program. Ensures they align with departmental, clinical, organizational, and provincial goals. Utilises current data and evidence-based practices, and apply change management to improve services, culture, and system structure. Supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of new and/or redesigned technical solutions and processes ensuring alignment with departmental and clinical objectives as well as provincial mandates. Ensures current data and evidence-based practices are incorporated with change and/or project management methodologies that will transform service, culture, and system structure. Reviews, develops, operationalizes, and assesses for change, the current processes, procedures, and policies to support sustainable integration of health, safety, and wellness principles for medical staff, including evaluation and continuous improvement processes. Creates comprehensive recommendations and action plans for improvements. Develops positive working relationships and partnerships with key internal and external partners to garner collaboration, involvement, and support towards building capacity in mobilizing a culture of health, safety, and wellness for medical staff. Develops communication strategies and promotional materials to enhance awareness and promote occupational health and safety or psychological safety issues and encourages medical staff engagement in new initiatives.
