A door hardware consultant isa professional who specializes in specifying, detailing, and coordinating all the door openings and hardware for a building project, ensuring compliance with codes for fire, life safety, and accessibility. They work with architects, contractors, and building owners to create hardware schedules and specifications for non-residential projects. These experts handle everything from basic hardware to complex systems like electrified hardware and fire-rated assemblies, providing unbiased support throughout the project. Qualifications Deep knowledge of advanced mechanical and electronic door hardware products. Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and use computer-aided design (CAD) software, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively interact with various project stakeholders. Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and solve problems in a high-pressure environment. High level of attention to detail is crucial for accuracy in specifications and code compliance. Proficiency in project management principles and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively. AHC or DHC Certification is considered an asset Post Secondary education in a related field Responsibilities Project consultation: Provide technical guidance to architects, contractors, and owners during all phases of a project. Code compliance: Ensure all door openings and hardware meet critical fire, life safety, and accessibility codes, as well as other building requirements. Specification writing: Create detailed specifications and hardware schedules for projects, often including complex electrified hardware and fire-rated assemblies. Coordination: Work to coordinate door openings and hardware with other building systems to avoid potential conflicts and ensure smooth installation. Product selection: Advise on the selection of the best products for a project, sometimes acting as an independent advisor to ensure the most appropriate and functional options are chosen.
