Bigstone Cree Nation Education Authority seeks an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Science teacher to inspire our high school students across General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of the Alberta Science curriculum, a passion for hands-on learning, and a dedication to creating an inclusive classroom environment that respects Indigenous perspectives and knowledge.

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum Delivery (General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics): Design and deliver comprehensive instruction aligned with the Alberta curriculum in General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Incorporate scientific inquiry, hands-on experimentation, and opportunities to connect scientific concepts to Indigenous knowledge systems and real-world applications.

Culturally Relevant Science Education: Explore ways to integrate Indigenous perspectives, scientific contributions, and ways of knowing into your science lessons across all disciplines.

Differentiated Instruction: Employ diverse instructional strategies to cater to various learning styles, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Implement adaptations and supports to ensure accessibility for all students, recognizing the unique needs of Indigenous learners.

Assessment and Evaluation: Develop and administer formative and summative assessments (e.g., projects, presentations, lab reports, tests, quizzes) to measure student progress and provide constructive feedback.

Laboratory Skills and Safety: Instruct and supervise students in safely and effectively using laboratory equipment and procedures. Emphasize scientific methodology and ethical practices in scientific investigations.

Classroom Management: Establish a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment. Implement inclusive classroom management strategies that align with Indigenous cultural values and practices.

Mentorship and Guidance: Provide guidance and support for students' academic, personal, and social development, potentially fostering connections with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and scientists in the community.

Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues, parents/guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and support staff to enhance student learning outcomes and well-being.

Professional Development: Actively participate in professional development opportunities to improve teaching practice and stay current with scientific advancements and culturally responsive teaching methods.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Education with a specialization in Science or a related field.

Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.

Demonstrated knowledge of the Alberta Science curriculum (General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics).

Experience teaching high school Science courses.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong laboratory and experimental design skills.

Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage diverse learners

Commitment to inclusion, equity, and culturally sensitive pedagogy.

Additional Desired Skills:

Experience in integrating technology for innovative teaching and learning.

Familiarity with assessment for learning principles and practices.

Knowledge of adolescent development and psychology.

Experience working in Indigenous communities or a demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, perspectives, and approaches to science.
