Financial Controller

Office Financial Services Agricultural, Forestry & Fishing Accounting Department: Finance Job Type : Full-time At Big Marble Farms, we grow healthy, sustainable produce year-round using cutting‑edge greenhouse and controlled‑environment agriculture (CEA) practices. We are seeking a Controller to join our leadership team and oversee the financial reporting, controls, data analytics, and accounting operations of our rapidly growing business. This role will ensure financial clarity, discipline, and forward‑looking insight across the organization. This role oversees the full financial function of the company, including planning, reporting, banking, and forecasting, ensuring our financial health supports our mission of delivering fresh, high‑quality produce to communities across Canada and beyond. The Controller will ensure the accuracy and integrity of all financial information while advising leadership on where capital and resources should be allocated to support greenhouse operations, labour planning, and long‑term growth. This role is in‑person at our Big Marble Farms location in Cypress County, Alberta. Financial Leadership & Operations: Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, inventory, and fixed assets Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, including regular preparation and review of balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements Lead financial business reporting and data analytics to provide clear, actionable insights for leadership Prepare management reports and dashboards to support executive decision‑making Act as the primary financial advisor to leadership, advising where money should go to maximize operational efficiency and long‑term returns Provide detailed financial insights on costs, margins, and operational efficiency, with a strong focus on greenhouse and agricultural operations Support leadership with financial analysis related to pricing, yields, labour costs, and cost controls Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning: Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting for greenhouse operations, labour planning, and capital projects Forecast financial needs and business performance multiple years in advance to support strategic planning and growth Monitor budget‑to‑actual performance and investigate variances, identifying gaps and opportunities for efficiency Manage cash flow forecasting, liquidity planning, and loan allocations Oversee banking activities, including loan portions, covenant tracking, and regular review of banking statements Support capital expenditure planning and tracking for equipment, facilities, technology, and infrastructure investments Ensure compliance with GAAP/IFRS, tax regulations, and agriculture‑specific requirements Develop, document, and continuously improve accounting policies, internal controls, and financial processes Coordinate external audits, reviews, and tax filings Identify inefficiencies within the finance function and design plans to strengthen processes and systems for the future Systems, Data & Tools: Maintain and improve financial systems, reporting tools, and data workflows Develop and manage advanced Excel‑based models and spreadsheets for forecasting, budgeting, and operational analysis Leverage data analytics to improve financial visibility, decision‑making, and operational performance Ensure financial data integrity across all systems and reporting outputs Team & Culture: Build and lead a high‑performing finance team aligned with Big Marble’s values of integrity, sustainability, and innovation Foster strong collaboration between finance and greenhouse operations teams to ensure sound financial practices at every level of the business Act as a trusted financial partner across the organization, supporting both day‑to‑day operations and long‑term planning Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field (CPA, CFA, or MBA preferred). 7–10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience 3–5 years in a senior accounting or controller‑level role Advanced proficiency in Excel Experience overseeing: Month‑end and year‑end close Financial statements and management reporting Budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis Experience working in agriculture or greenhouses would be an asset.
