Sheriff’s role responsibilities vary by directorate and function, and include the following: Court and Security Services – Law Court Sheriffs provide a secure and armed presence within Alberta court facilities, ensuring the safety and security of all persons within including the judiciary, government employees and officials, and members of the public. Protection, Communication, and Investigation Services – Comprised of three sections including Protection Services (Legislature and Government Security, Executive Protection Unit), Communication and Transport Services (Sheriff Operational Communications Centre, Transport Services) and Investigative Services (Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods, Sheriff Investigative Support Unit and Fugitive Apprehension Sheriffs Support Team). Operational Support Services – Supports all areas of the Sheriffs Branch, allowing operational units to focus their resources on delivering frontline services. Staffed by both sworn and non-sworn personnel, OSS responsibilities includes recruitment and staffing, staff development, policy and communications, procurement and asset management, professional standards, as well as technology and information services. Sheriff Highway Patrol Services – Conducts intelligence driven traffic enforcement to reduce serious injury and fatal collisions and preserve the public’s investment in transportation infrastructure. Through focused enforcement on speed, seatbelts, distracted and impaired driving, as well as commercial vehicle compliance through on-road inspections, sheriffs endeavor to protect the safety of all highway users. Representatives of the Alberta Sheriffs must maintain a high level of professionalism and reliability and be able to demonstrate sound judgment and excellent problem-solving skills when interacting with challenging individuals in volatile situations. A high degree of integrity and maturity is essential for this role as well as confident and sound decision-making skills. Qualifications A minimum of a two-year diploma is required PLUS at least two (2) years of progressively responsible related experience or equivalent (1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience). Additional requirements that may be required include: Satisfactory 10-year Commercial Drivers abstract Valid Class 4 Alberta Driver's License or equivalent Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level-C Certification Enhanced Reliability Clearance Certified evaluation assessment certificate of post-secondary credentials obtained OUTSIDE of Canada (if applicable) Preference is given to candidates who have previous experience in the following areas: Security, where the role regularly requires direct contact with the public (e.g. mall security, hospital security, airport screening officer, loss prevention officer, commissionaire, armed guard, etc.) Bylaw enforcement Military service with focus on protection or security Emergency response (e.g. EMT or firefighter) Working with adults with mental health or behavioural issues Client group work Working with youth in areas such as: the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, working with youth in an education setting, providing services to youth with disabilities, youth mentorship, youth counselling service, crisis intervention workers, shelter staff, and/or addiction support workers The following are considered assets: Previous experience in school support roles (e.g. school support workers, behavioral aides, classroom supervisors) Previous experience in crisis and emergency communication roles (e.g. crisis line operators, emergency dispatchers, regulated customer support) Previous experience in public-facing transit and crowd management roles (e.g. transit operators, fare enforcement officers, crowd control personnel) Previous experience in regulated or service-oriented environments (banking, retail, customer facing food industry roles) Previous experience in healthcare support roles (e.g. unit clerks, patient support staff, physiotherapy assistants) Previous experience in social service and rehabilitation roles (e.g. outreach workers, rehabilitation assistants, childcare workers) Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.
