Company Description Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package. As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030. The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction. What is the project? A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River). Stations: One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station. Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations. Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown). Job Description The Plant Engineer is responsible for coordinating and supporting the implementation and maintenance of the mechanical systems within the construction site, TBMs and tunnels. This role will manage Mechanical foreman, superintendents and roles supervising plant and equipment for tunnel operations while ensuring quality and safety control of mechanical installations and safety controls for works on pressurized and lifting systems. Key Responsibilities Coordinate and oversee the safe depressurization and isolation of pressure systems, ensuring all required safety documentation is issued accurately. Manage and resolve system-wide snagging items, ensuring timely completion and proper documentation handover. Maintain and optimize mechanical systems, including energy storage mechanisms, pumping systems, and mechanical guards, to ensure peak performance. Verify compliance by ensuring method statements and risk assessments are in place prior to any site work. Lead workforce deployment, assigning competent personnel for installation, maintenance, and repair activities in line with O&M manuals and statutory regulations. Plan and execute installations and repairs during scheduled work stoppages to minimize downtime and maintain productivity. Ensure resource readiness by maintaining adequate supplies of materials, tools, and equipment for uninterrupted operations. Provide clear instructions and enforce safety regulations and project requirements across all activities. Inspect and validate completed work to confirm adherence to codes, regulations, and quality standards. Manage inventory of spares and consumables essential for efficient operation and maintenance. Maintain accurate records of work performed, including usage of spares and consumables for electrical and electronic components. Ensure environmental compliance in accordance with the Environmental Management Plan. Interpret technical manuals for TBMs and associated equipment such as conveyor belts and MSVs. Supervise work activities, ensuring tasks are carried out by trained and competent personnel. Deliver health and safety inductions for all operatives, including subcontractors and self-employed workers. Conduct regular toolbox talks and method statement briefings to reinforce safety and procedural compliance. Establish and maintain safe work environments, including secure access and egress points. Monitor subcontractor activities to ensure compliance with safety rules and procedures. Promote hazard awareness, encouraging reporting of near misses, observed risks, and equipment defects. Address reported hazards promptly, removing defective equipment from service when necessary. Verify equipment safety, ensuring all plant and machinery are defect‑free and certified as required. Ensure proper use of PPE, providing necessary equipment and enforcing compliance with site rules. Minimize manual handling risks, ensuring remaining tasks are performed by trained operatives. Apply disciplinary measures when necessary to uphold health and safety standards. Collaborate with health and safety advisors on all related matters. Assign suitable tasks to individuals with health restrictions to maintain safety and productivity. Demonstrate leadership by example, consistently modeling safe work practices. Qualifications Minimum Mechanical Engineering Degree. Previous experience in a similar role, preferably working with TBM (tunnel boring machines) and heavy construction plant. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal. Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications and design. Demonstrate experience of managing the works of others and monitoring the quality and safety of their works. Working knowledge of Canadian engineering practices, codes and standards preferred.
