Highwood Emissions Management is on a mission to make industrial emissions transparency the new default. Since launching in 2020, our team of engineers, scientists, and policy experts has helped energy producers representing 10% of global oil & gas output slash methane and carbon emissions—and earn OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard certification—faster and at lower cost. We operate like a high-growth startup: rapid experimentation, continuous learning, and measurable impact. You’ll tackle complex climate challenges alongside industry pioneers, supported by a culture of respect, curiosity, and a good dose of fun. The pace is brisk and the problems are tough, but the rewards—professional growth, real-world impact, and equity in our success—are big. If you thrive in ambiguity, value collaboration, and want your Monday morning to matter, let’s talk. Highwood Emissions Management (Highwood) is an equal opportunity employer working to enable diversity in the workforce. We welcome all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status. We also value diversity of worldview, experience, and perspective. Your Mission Reducing GHG emissions from the oil and natural gas industry is one of the single greatest short-term impacts that we can make towards decarbonizing our economy. Incentivizing the production, transportation, and end use of low-carbon energy is critical. Highwood is looking to expand its R&D team and is currently seeking to fill the role of Senior Emissions Scientist. The R&D team serves as the technical and scientific “glue” at Highwood where your role will be to support and realize Highwood’s research and innovation objectives. Currently, Highwood is focused on building our Emission Intelligence Platform (EIP), which allows customers to understand their emissions in new and valuable ways. A Senior Emissions Scientist serves as a technical leader within Highwood, designing and validating the analytical and statistical methodologies that underpin our Emissions Intelligence Platform (EIP) and consulting work. They independently develop and prototype novel approaches to methane quantification, reconciliation, and uncertainty analysis, working closely with product, development, and consulting teams. They communicate scientific reasoning clearly to diverse audiences and help ensure Highwood remains at the forefront of methane measurement science. What You’ll Do Work with an unprecedented quantity of methane data – Between our software and consulting partners, Highwood works with many vendors and operators active in this space. This gives our team exposure to a variety of datasets. Work in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment – The R&D team works collaboratively with the product, development, and senior leadership teams. Engage in exciting consulting projects – R&D provides technical and scientific support for all of Highwood, which includes the consulting team on an as-needed basis. Leverage your skills to set the standard for methane emissions reporting in oil and gas – The expectations for how methane emissions are reported is changing rapidly, and Highwood is in a unique position to set the bar. The ideal candidate has deep quantitative expertise and thrives at the intersection of measurement science, statistics, and policy. They can clearly explain and defend analytical decisions to audiences ranging from software developers to executives and regulators. In a rapidly evolving methane landscape, they bring curiosity, intellectual rigor, and the ability to independently develop and validate scientific methods under uncertainty. Participate in idea generation and help prioritize future research topics based on product impact and resource availability. Lead the development of statistical and analytical frameworks for methane quantification and reconciliation. Design, scope, and work with the rest of the R&D team to prototype novel solutions to measurement informed inventory and methane quantification problems. Effectively document and communicate, in written and verbal form, analytics solutions in a clear and concise manner to clients and the rest of the team. Actively participate in client calls, contributing insights to deepen understanding of client needs and build relationship management skills. Keep abreast of the relevant scientific literature. Speak at and participate in workshops, conferences, and webinars. Effectively manage and resolve multiple priorities, project complexities and uncertainties. Provide mentorship to more junior team members. The Benefits Our benefits package is among the best. Each year it includes $1,500 in dental coverage and more for prescription drugs, vision, massage, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, and much more. Our benefits package includes your spouse and all children. We offer $5,000/year to help cover non-essential educational pursuits of your choice. We have an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) – and you don’t need to pay to be a partial owner of Highwood – and share in the success we achieve. We encourage employees to take breaks – especially vacation. If that’s not enough – our core value is ‘People First’. Check out our Team Promise below. About You Here are some of the things we’re looking for. Note that we don’t expect you to have all of these qualifications, experiences, and/or skills. We often choose to train someone with the right attitude over hiring the wrong person with the right skills. Experience and Expertise Master's degree or higher in Remote Sensing, Statistics, Energy Systems Modelling, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field. Proven experience as a research scientist extracting insights from empirical data. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Leadership skills and experience are considered an asset. Experience with methane measurement technologies is an asset. Experience within the oil and gas industry is an asset. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and experience with data manipulation libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy). Proficient problem-solving abilities, capable of understanding complex issues, identifying opportunities, proposing solutions, and addressing objections. Meticulous attention to detail, particularly in reviewing datasets from novel methane measurement technologies. Positive attitude, including ability and willingness to work on diverse assignments ranging from simple, repetitive tasks to conceptual, strategic challenges. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Exceptional organizational and time management skills. Highwood’s promise to staff and contractors is to: Treat you with respect, fairness, and honesty. Give you a voice. We will encourage you to question the way we do things, and we will empower you to speak your mind. Understand your goals, insomuch as you are willing to share, and work to help you achieve them. Support your growth, promote you, and provide opportunities to expand your network and foster your professional identity. Appreciate, recognize, and reward your contributions and wins. Make time to have fun and celebrate success. Foster an environment that encourages you to share your concerns, no matter how small they might seem. Your promise to Highwood is to: Treat others with respect, value their contributions, and lift them up, even when they fail. You never know how others might be struggling. Be patient with yourself. We work on unsolved challenges. We expect mistakes and see them as learning opportunities. Strive to continually learn and grow professionally and personally, regardless of where you started and where you might end up. Embrace innovation and change – there is no destination. Do your best – only you know what that means. Set boundaries and respect them. Take a break when you need it. Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted. Thank you for your interest. #J-18808-Ljbffr
