The Organization

The Canadian Wireless Internet Service Provider (“CanWISP”) is an organization that represents Canadian Wireless Internet Service Providers from coast to coast. We engage in legislative, regulatory, and policy-informing processes on behalf of our members. Their missions encompass providing reliable Internet access to households and businesses across Canada, with a particular focus on rural communities. 


At our core, we advocate for the efficient and equitable utilization of spectrum, a public resource, for the benefit of all Canadians. CanWISP also works to promote best practices within its ISP membership.  

CanWISP ISP members are deeply invested in their communities, contributing to local economies, and fostering employment opportunities.


Our membership is comprised of both ISP members as well as Industry Partners (manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, software and service providers, and professional services firms) within the ISP ecosystem.


CanWISP is a federally incorporated Not-For-Profit organization.  


The Position

The Executive Director plays a pivotal role in the strategic execution of CanWISP. They will work closely with the Board of Directors to refine and execute the organization's mission and strategic goals. The Executive Director will oversee all aspects of the organization's day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment with its objectives.


The Executive Director will serve as the organization's primary spokesperson, representing it to the public and stakeholders. They will also oversee and guide all organizational activities, including Government Relations, Member Services, and Administrative functions.


On average, this position entails approximately 60 hours of work every month , with extra hours surrounding the organization of the annual conference.


Responsibilities

Mission and Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to refine and implement the organization's mission and strategic plan.
  • Ensure that all activities and initiatives are in line with the organization's long-term goals and objectives.
  • Government Relations
  • Foster and enhance relationships with key stakeholders, including the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), provincial and municipal governments, as well as advisory groups such as Blue Sky Net, Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN), Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA), Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), etc.
  • Coordinate and articulate CanWISP's stance on regulatory and policy issues.
  • Conduct regular meetings with parliamentarians, representatives from ISED, and the CRTC.
  • Stay informed about legislative and policy developments concerning rural internet access in Canada and broader internet-related issues.
  • Engage with similar organizations (CNOC, ITPA, CCSA, BCBA, WISPA) to align messaging with governmental bodies and regulators, and to collectively advocate for the interests of CanWISP members.


Operational Management

  • Take responsibility for the daily operations of the organization, including budgeting, and staff management.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards, as well as adherence to best practices in the non-profit sector.
  • Oversee all administrative operations within the organization.


Member Services

  • Craft and distribute email communications to stakeholders, and promptly address any inquiries they may have.
  • Coordinate the planning and execution of the annual conference, as well as any regional events or representation activities.
  • Consistently seek methods to increase our membership numbers.


Requirements

Communication Skills

  • Proficient in written communication (newsletters, formal letters, and presentations for diverse audiences including members, parliamentarians, government departments (ISED), and regulators (CRTC)).
  • French fluency is an asset, but not a requirement. 


Professionalism

  • Represent the organization with professionalism and courtesy in all interactions with stakeholders.


Technical Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Google collaboration tools (Docs, Sheets, etc.) and Microsoft 365 tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with internet technologies, and preferably with fixed wireless last-mile connectivity, would be an asset.


Travel

  • Occasional travel is necessary to represent the organization at industry events, such as: the Telecom Summit, CCSA Connect, BCBA Conference, WISPAPALOOZA, etc. 
  • The Executive Director should be available at short notice to attend meetings in Ottawa with Members of Parliament, Ministers, Senators, and their office personnel.


Location

  • This position operates on a remote basis, with no formal office location.
  • The Executive Director is expected to be a Canadian resident, with a slight preference for candidates based in the Ottawa area.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., telecommunications, business administration, non-profit management).
  • Proven leadership experience in a senior management role, preferably within the non-profit sector or telecommunications industry.
  • Strong strategic planning and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and represent the organization professionally.
  • Understanding of regulatory and policy issues related to the telecommunications sector, as well as experience in advocacy and government relations.
  • Commitment to the organization's mission and values, with a passion for promoting equitable access to telecommunications services.
