GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

With 40 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected non-profit charity with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. We offer a range of accelerated programs including mentoring, employment, settlement, language training together with specialized programs for skilled trades, women, and youth. We have 5 locations across the GTA and serve 16,000 clients annually. We believe we are in the best position to provide thought leadership through evidence-based programming, impact stories and proactive policy advocacy using knowledge mobilization products.


PROGRAM NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Tech Literacy For Black Seniors Program , offered by Skills for Change, is a vital initiative designed to empower older adults within the Black community in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). This program, aptly named G.R.O.W. (Guided Resources for Older Wellness), focuses on enhancing the technological proficiency and mental wellness of its participants. Over the course of eight weeks, the program provides accessible technology training that is tailored to meet the unique needs of Black seniors, fostering an environment where they can learn and grow in confidence with their digital skills. Supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, G.R.O.W. aims to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusivity, ensuring that Black seniors are not left behind in an increasingly digital world. Through this program, participants will not only gain valuable technology skills but also enhance their ability to connect with their community, access resources, and maintain their mental well-being.


IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS:

  • Proficiency in designing and creating data collection trackers and generating various reports at an intermediate to advanced level.
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering tech literacy workshops specifically designed for clients with limited to no knowledge of computers. The ability to create engaging and accessible content is essential.
  • Intermediate to master level skills in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite. You'll use these tools to create materials and support seniors in their learning journey.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity in working with individuals from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds. This includes understanding both visible and invisible dimensions of diversity. As a workshop facilitator, you'll interact with seniors from various walks of life.
  • A strong commitment to maintaining high standards of culturally responsive service delivery.
  • Awareness of the unique social issues faced by black seniors, including barriers related to settlement, social isolation, and the specific challenges encountered by black immigrants and refugees.
  • Familiarity with community resources and services related to mental health and wellness. Connecting seniors to appropriate support networks is crucial.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential matters with discretion. Seniors may share personal information during workshops, and maintaining confidentiality is essential.
  • Proficiency in planning, implementing, and leading group activities for the workshops.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Managing workshop schedules and materials efficiently is vital.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and effective problem-solving ability. Seniors may have varying levels of tech literacy, and adapting your approach is essential.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tech Literacy Workshop facilitation for multiple locations within the GTA
  • Conduct thorough client intake assessments, considering individual needs, safety risk levels, and information related to settlement and programs within the organization.
  • Gather essential data to understand seniors’ tech literacy levels and tailor workshops accordingly.
  • Develop, promote, and deliver specialized tech literacy workshops specifically designed for black seniors.
  • Cover a range of topics, including basic computer skills, internet usage, online safety, and digital communication.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other community programs within Skills for Change.
  • Ensure workshops are accessible and engaging for participants with varying levels of prior knowledge.
  • Maintain accurate participants and program records in Salesforce and other designated databases and generate program statistics and other reports as requested to inform management decisions.
  • Collect both qualitative and quantitative data during workshops (e.g., participant feedback, progress, challenges).
  • Generate program statistics and other reports as you conduct training workshops.
  • Participate in areas of professional development and training that are critical to the needs the client population.
  • Conduct clients’ satisfaction surveys to inform program development and expansion as required and collaborate with other programs across the organization.
  • Prepare for and participate in regular scheduled supervision, team meetings and other internal and external committees as required.
  • Participate in ongoing training & development in areas related to mental health and wellness, either self-directed or formal, as well as related topics, such as mental health, addictions, or coping strategies.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism as outlined in agency privacy and confidentiality policy.
  • Be flexible to take on other duties as required by management based on department needs.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Bachelor's degree in project management, Sociology, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related fields.
  • Experience in facilitation, adult education, project coordination, execution, monitoring and reporting, preferably in community development projects or in a non-profit environment.
  • Minimum 2 years direct experience in a similar capacity or related subject area preferred
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends when necessary. Adapting to seniors’ schedules and program demands is important.
  • Must own and drive a vehicle.
  • Experience operating from an anti-Black racism lens. Sensitivity to diverse perspectives and commitment to equity are critical when working with black seniors.
  • Requires a minimum of 2 years of experience developing and delivering learning and training programs (online, classroom).
  • Ability to provide a clear, mandatory vulnerable sector check prior to employment. Ensuring the safety and well-being of black senior participants is paramount.
