As an early stage start-up, Epoch is seeking a VP, Engineering to join our Canadian team. As the VP Engineering you will play a key leadership role in driving Epoch's Engineering efforts to meet our strategic goals. This means, leading our roadmap in partnership with product, to plan, direct and oversee engineering activities to empower the team to hit our timelines and milestones to support our ongoing evolution.

Leaders from Salesforce, Datadog, Reddit, Instacart and more (like below) use Epoch every day to enable their culture, internal comms, learning, and employee engagement programs.

You’re the right candidate if you are a forward-thinking leader and technologist with the ability to lead engineers both from a technical and personnel perspective. You are someone who wants to join an organization where you have a voice and can influence the business. We are also looking for someone who still wants to contribute to producing code, while leading the small team. Equally important, you embody Epoch’s values .

This is a unique opportunity to join the company at an early stage and contribute at a level where you will see and feel the direct impact of your leadership. While we are a remote-first company, we do have co-working space in Kitchener-Waterloo and expect the VP, Engineering to spend time a few times a month.

7+ years of progressive experience in engineering roles

5+ years of experience in leadership positions overseeing complex engineering projects and teams

Proven track record of successfully leading and managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, driving high performance cultures, delivering results in a fast-paced environment

Demonstrated excellence in building technical cultures with mission-driven urgency, quality and accountability across the entire life-cycle from planning, through development, and production support.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the demonstrated ability to gather and analyze complex data to drive insights and decision-making

Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools, with a strong ability to plan, execute, and monitor engineering projects, ensuring on-time delivery and compliance with quality standards

The ability to communicate highly technical subject matter in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences

Experience working in a startup environment with a high level of comfort navigating ambiguity, adapting to change, and taking calculated risks

Desire to still contribute to code base

Familiarity with our tech: Python, Flask, React, AWS, Docker, GraphQL

Bonus points for experience in HR tech

???? What you will do

You will plan, scope, build and ship product alongside co-founders and founding product designed and engineering team

Collaboratively set the technical direction for the engineering team. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability

Develop and execute a comprehensive engineering strategy aligned with Epoch’s overall business objectives, ensuring efficient utilization of resources and effective collaboration between key stakeholders

Ensure Epoch’s platform and integration are functioning optimally to meet the needs of our customers. Maintain a culture of quality and engineering accountability for production systems

Oversee the planning, execution and timely delivery of engineering projects ensuring adherence to engineering best practices, reliability and stability of platform

Manage engineering operations, including budgeting, resource allocation, and project prioritization

Develop and maintain Quality Assurance processes

Create path to reliable, stable and scalable platform and technology

Contribute to code and projects

Collaborate with cross functional teams (product, sales, customer experience) and leadership to develop and meet organizational goals while supplying expertise and guidance on projects, operations, and systems

Provide clear and timely communication and effective coordination with stakeholders to ensure risks, issues, and changes are well managed

Research emerging technologies, vendors, and industry trends. Identify, recommend, and implement new technologies and systems to improve organizational processes and decision-making

Prioritize, optimize and support releases. Balance speed vs. feature set trade-offs in real-time and ultimately ensure our final products deliver on key external and internal requirements

Assist teams in integration configuration and testing alongside the client and supporting vendors.

Provide coaching, mentoring, and support to the direct report staff in both technical and non-technical issues. Ensure high productivity of the team members

This is a full-time role

The base pay range for this position is CA$145,000.00 - CA$215,000 per year.**
