The Department of Philosophy is an international leader in the history of philosophy, ethics, philosophy of science and philosophy of mind. Your opportunity Under the direction of the Department Manager for the Department of Philosophy, the Communications Officer is responsible for the design and development of all the department’s communications and marketing material. Responsibilities include writing, editing, and producing key communication materials designed to inform of the activities and achievements of the Philosophy department. The incumbent produces news and feature stories for the departmental website and e‑newsletter, advancement and promotional materials, and utilizes new media channels to develop and enhance the profile of the Philosophy department. The incumbent builds and maintains relationships with alumni for the purpose of obtaining information. The incumbent organizes departmental events. The incumbent is responsible for the administration of the Philosophy Graduate Mentorship Program and other departmental outreach activities. Your responsibilities will include Implementing plans and process improvements for content generation activities Producing promotional and outreach materials Drafting and editing content for print and/or online communications channels Writing and editing copy and content to advance communications objectives Analyzing metrics to identify trends Customizing website according to objectives or user feedback Determining logistical details and activities for events and/or programming Essential Qualifications Bachelor’s degree, preferably in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum four (4) years of recent and related experience in communications, journalism, or marketing. Experience with the development and distribution of web and print communications, including articles (feature and news), reports, letters, and promotional and public relations material (brochures, newsletters, etc.). Experience with developing and managing integrated communications plans and coordinating projects from end-to-end. Proven journalistic skills, including investigating and pitching stories, executing interviews, and writing news and feature stories. Demonstrated experience conceptualizing and organizing small to large scale events and outreach activities. Demonstrated experience and understanding of social and multimedia strategies, tools, channels, trends, and capabilities. Exceptional proofreading and editing skills with working knowledge of graphic design principles for web and print communication. Experience collecting, analyzing, and preparing data to determine trends and assess the effectiveness of marketing and communications initiatives. Experience developing and managing content for websites and newsletters. Strong skills with content management systems (WordPress & Drupal). Demonstrated advanced skills in MS Office (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Skilled in the use of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver). Demonstrated skills with social media channels and their respective audiences (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc.), and how to utilize each channel to meet planned goals. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to deal with a variety of responsibilities, with interruptions. Organizes work effectively and establishes priorities in a flexible way. Demonstrates tact, diplomacy, and good judgment. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and deal effectively and professionally with faculty, students, alumni, staff, media, and other internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrates a high level of initiative, accuracy, and organizational ability. Assets (Nonessential) Graphic editorial design experience and skills considered a desirable asset. Knowledge of the University’s practices and communications processes is also an asset.
