POSITION SUMMARY

The Learning Alternatives Program at the John Howard Society of Durham Region, funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, supports individuals in developing non-accredited academic and essential skills aligned with the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF), including reading, writing, numeracy, digital literacy, and employability skills.

The Adult Learning Instructor delivers instruction, assessment, and individualized learning supports to help learners progress toward goals such as sustainable employment, further education or training, and increased independence. Working within an adult education framework, the instructor supports learners at OALCF levels 1–3 and applies strong instructional expertise in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills to facilitate meaningful skill development.

This role is community-based and delivered through flexible in-person, virtual, hybrid, and itinerant models across North Durham. Service delivery takes place in community partner locations and outreach settings, requiring responsiveness to rural realities and barriers such as transportation challenges, digital access limitations, housing and income instability, and social isolation. The instructor must be adaptable in tailoring service delivery to meet diverse learner needs across geographically dispersed communities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct initial, ongoing, and exit educational assessments using a variety of tools to determine learner skills, interests, abilities, and goals.
• Develop individualized learning plans aligned with OALCF levels, learner goals, and employment, training, or education pathways.
• Demonstrate digital technology skills, reading, writing, and math proficiencies sufficient to develop curriculum and instruct adult learners within OALCF levels 1, 2, and 3.
• Facilitate 1:1 and group instruction using in-person, virtual, hybrid, and itinerant delivery models across North Durham.
• Deliver services in community partner and outreach locations, adapting to rural and geographically dispersed communities.
• Adapt instructional approaches, scheduling, and service delivery methods to meet the unique needs of rural and geographically dispersed communities.
• Select and adapt learning materials aligned with learner goals, OALCF principles, and community/labour market context.
• Contribute to continuous improvement by evaluating learner needs and outcomes, identifying community gaps, and then participate in developing and implementing program improvements.
• Communicate effectively with learners and colleagues both verbally and in writing.
• Show leadership and effectively problem solve and critically think.
• Provide timely follow-up support and coaching to assist learners in achieving goals.
• Take initiative and work collaboratively as part of the Employment and Training Services team.
• Provide day-to-day orientation and guidance to placement students and volunteers.
• Meet quarterly and annual performance targets as established by funders and the agency.
• Efficiently manage a diverse and at times high-volume client caseload.
• Support learners to achieving measurable progress toward funder established goal paths

Case Management/Documentation

• Foster a positive learning environment for service users of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
• Maintain accurate case notes, learner plans, progress reports, and service user files in accordance with program standards.
• Ensure timely and accurate data entry and reporting using required systems and tools (e.g., Excel, CaMS).

• Provide relevant instruction based on the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF) levels 1–3.

• Able to work in an environment that requires the ability to collect and gather statistical information, meet deadlines, and achieve targets.
