Calgary, Canada GeoMetrix Full time

About GeoMetrix At GeoMetrix, we're more than just a software provider. We're your partner in optimizing rail operations through innovative technology solutions. Our deep industry expertise and customer-focused approach set us apart in delivering real value to rail shippers and operators. Our mission is to be the most reliable backend logistics partner in the rail industry — empowering our clients to focus on movement, not paperwork. About Valstone Valstone acquired GeoMetrix in 2025 to elevate our logistics portfolio. Valstone is an industrial software conglomerate, acquiring and operating industrial software businesses. We're applying the proven playbook of our sister company, Valsoft (130+ acquisitions, $3B+ valuation), and targeting $200M in run-rate revenue by 2027. Valstone's objective is to become an industry-specific leader in 5 key sectors; agriculture, logistics, food processing, bulk materials, and manufacturing acting as an operating partner with all acquired companies. The Role Reporting to the Managing Director, the Head of Technical Product & Technology will lead GeoMetrix's product strategy and modernization efforts, blending strategic vision with deep technical understanding. This leader will partner closely with engineering to transform GeoMetrix's legacy systems into a modern, scalable platform built on technologies such as Python, Vue3, and MySQL, ensuring that technical architecture, data design, and business strategy remain tightly aligned. The ideal candidate brings a proven track record in modernizing software platforms, including hands-on experience with database architecture and design, and delivering upgrades that enhance performance, longevity, and customer value. This is a critical and highly visible role within the organization, with a path to scaling into a true company leader. It's an opportunity for a product leader who can think like an engineer and act like a business owner to shape the future of GeoMetrix's technology and growth. Key Responsibilities Lead by doing: contribute meaningful code regularly, jump into complex tickets, and take ownership of critical technical work when timelines or quality require it. Drive modernization delivery end-to-end, ensuring reliable planning, prioritization, and releases. Own the technical evolution of the platform, including Python backend services, Vue3 front-end modernization, and MySQL re-architecture. Set and uphold engineering best practices (testing, observability, code quality, documentation, CI/CD). Act as a technical escalation point: debug high-severity issues, guide root-cause analysis, and implement durable fixes. Manage, mentor, and grow engineers; build a culture of accountability, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement. Partner with product/stakeholders to convert roadmap needs into sound technical plans with clear milestones and tradeoffs. Establish and track engineering metrics (delivery predictability, reliability, performance, defect trends). Communicate progress, risks, and technical decisions clearly to leadership and cross-functional teams. Qualifications: Professional Experience: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field (or equivalent practical experience). 5–7 years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a strong record of shipping production SaaS systems. 2+ years leading engineers as a tech lead, team lead, or engineering manager while remaining an active contributor. Strong, current coding ability in Python, and comfort working across a modern web stack (Vue3, APIs, cloud infra). Demonstrated success leading modernization/refactor/re-platforming initiatives in live production environments. Solid depth in MySQL/database architecture, including data modeling, query optimization, and performance tuning. Ability to translate business/product priorities into pragmatic technical execution plans. Clear communicator who can collaborate cross-functionally and explain tradeoffs to non-engineers. Personal Attributes: Data-first mindset with a passion for continuous improvement. Highly adaptable and resilient; thrives in a dynamic, evolving environment. Talent magnet; able to acquire, retain and grow a high-performing team. Preferred Location: Calgary, Alberta (hybrid)
